Show PAGE 10 TEMPLAR TRUMPET Latch Key aids hyper children by Rebecca Allen Noise of excited children floods the yellow carpeted room in the Ephraim City Building as the energetic youth leaders enter the new experience of working with approximately twenty little hyper children. This after school program is called Latch Key, started at the beginning of this year. Latch Key is designed for children whose parents are not available after school. It also gives the young children (K-3- ), a wonderful opportunity to build social skills. Every week the children, together with their youth leaders will get to do many fun and educational activities. The youth leaders involved are M.H.S students that world-travele- Manti-Ephrai- m Mr. Simmons is a native of Manti and has been playing the piano since he was nine. He graduated from Brigham Young University where he majored in piano performance. He then traveled to Europe and expanded his knowledge through studying and teaching. He played the piano for an opera house and also for such things as auditions. After his time in Europe, Mr. Simmons received his masters the famous Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Mary land. He is presently on the staff of the Julliard School of Music in New York City. degree from Mr. Simmons is an example of what you can become if you follow your dreams. What is a leader anyway? A leader is a person who helps others to create a vision, set goals, establish measurable objectives and then helps to facilitate the completion of the project. At a high school level of student council, an effective leader may have the following qualities: he she is creative, a finisher, respected, a hard worker, devoted, likable, entertaining, enthusiastic, optimistic, a defender of truth, work well with others, and must have the courage to go out of hisher comfort zone. We have need for leaders at this school. Although student government elections arent for a few months, now is the time .to become involved if you plan on running. Become involved by talking to your class repre- place to obtain scholastic excellence. There are so many personal reasons to become a leader, such as scholarships etc., but the most important reason you must want for others. You should have the desire to serve them and yearn to make a difference in peoples lives. Find a way in which you can make this school a more enjoyable Big Chill 3 attended were Amy Baker, Leadership roles are rewarding Professional pianist John Simmons conducts Master Class By: Rebecca Allen For all those piano and music lovers, if you did not attend the master class and concert by d John Simmons, you really missed out on an excellent musical training opportunity. Mr. Simmons concert was of the music of famous composers such as Chopin, Brahms, Ravel, and Scirabin. This all took place on December 28, 1996. The master class consisted of different pianists who played a piece that they had prepared, upon which Mr. Simmons gave corrections on the students technique. Four of the eight pupils that attended were from the area. They were Colleen Lindsay, Rebecca Wallingford, Camille Barclay, and Jenny Frame. are on Ephraim Youth City Council, and others who want to be invovlved. The leaders that By Paul Scholes Two new students at Manti High School are sisters. They are Denise and Jennifer Pearson. Denise is a freshman and is 15 years old. Jennifer is 18 and a senior. Despite their difference in age, a lot of people think that the two sisters are twins. Denise and Jennifer moved to Manti with their family last summer from Fairfield, Montana where they had lived most of their lives. While in Montana, the two club and was the student director for the Manti High School play Damn Yankees. She is also looking forward to participating in her first speech meet where she will do impromptu. Other interests for Jennifer include baseball, basketball, and art (she loves to draw). Jennifer is getting ready to graduate after this semester and after high school hopes to attend either Ricks or Snow. She wants to be an artist. Denises favorite class at sisters attended Benjamin Manti Franklin Academy, which was school house. They a one-room were only required to attend school four hours a day for three days a week. In their spare time, they worked at Dairy Best, a family owned cheese plant. In addition to school and work, Denise took voice lessons and Jennifer was involved with drama activities. At Manti, Jennifers favorite class is English and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Liddell who teaches her Speech class. Jennifer is a member of the Drama is P.E. where she loves to play kickball. She also likes basketball and volleyball. Denise is a member of SWIFT where she has been involved with d activities such as the 12 Days of Christmas and Christmas carolling. Denise enjoys singing and has sung at music recitals, plays, in church, and at family reunions. She also likes to draw. After high school, Denise also wants to go to either Ricks or Snow where she plans to major in Elementary Education to become a teacher. service-oriente- Templarettes participate in Drill Team competition by llcidi Bailey Staying after school to work on dance routines,painting yellow submarines, and working on other props, in addition to 5:30am practices, is what it takes to be a Templarette. Manti Templarettes do these things to prepare for Drill Team compe- tition season. Recently they went to the Richfield invitational on Saturday, January 1 8 and Region competition on Sat urday, January 25. For the Richfield invitational the Drill Team members said they had improved a lot since their last competition. They placed 5th with Military, 7th in dance, and 8th in Novelty (Beatles routine.) For Region the Templarettes did better than at the Richfield Invitational. They placed 3rd in Novelty (again Beatles), 4th in Military, and 5th in Dance. |
