Summit By Greg Dettinger The Manti Templars shot a cool 30 out of 39 from the line and scored 80 points, their highest point total of the season, as they hosted a very physical South Summit Wildcats team last Friday for an important region victory, 80-6- 1. South Summit won the jump and scored first off a and managed to hold the lead throughout the quarter, despite Cory Hatch hitting 6 out of 6 from the line. At the end of the quarter, the Templars were down three-point- er 20-1- 7. The Templars continued to play aggressively and with 5:02 left in the 2nd quarter Ira Rice went to the free throw line and sank two to put Manti ahead for the first time in the game. In the next minute of play Cory Hatch went to the line two more times and sank all 4 to secure the Templars lead, which they never relinquished. Manti went into the locker room up 35-- 3 behind the 1 hot scoring of Cory with Kenny Cox with 6 1 1 points, points and Connor Thompson, who came the bench for 1 1 off points. The The Box Score Templars had hit 9 out of 10 free throws as well. Manti came out of the locker room on fire both offensively and defensively and held the Wildcats to only 8 points behind the aggressive defense of Kurt Keisel who seemed to find a way to get his hands on the ball almost every time South Summit had possession of it. The Templars really turned up the heat in the 4th quarter as they had scoring contributions from 1 1 players driving them to their highest point total of the season and their second region victory, 80-- 6 . Cory Hatch led all scorers having hit 13 out of 14 from the line with 7 points from the floor for 20 1 points. Connor Thompson, Kenny Cox and Kurt Keisel were all in double figures as well. Mantis offense really jived, but it was their aggressive defense which shut down the very physical play of the Wildcats. Manti will travel to Morgan Friday, Jan. 31 to play a tough Morgan Trojans team. The game will be broadcast on KMTI radio beginning at 7 p.m. By Tricia Call Sports fan extraordinaire By Greg Dettinger The Manti wrestlers lost a close dual match to the Gunnison Bulldogs in their last region match of the year last Thursday. Three seniors, Thomas Buchner, JefTLind-sa- y and Cody Strickland, were honored, along with their parents, prior to the beginning of their last home match. Gunnison squeaked by Manti in Mantis closest dual match of the year. Shaun Kjar, 45-3- 6 Ken Riding and Clint Kjar all won by forfeit. Riley Anderson, Jeff Lindsay and Cody Strickland all won by pinning their opponents. On Saturday, the Templars traveled down to Moab for the Grand County Tournament. Leadership? The ability to see talent and sign them to the home team? The ability to charm the press and the fans? Or is there some other quality that is common to the best coaches... In Ben Hur, after Judah sets out to return to his home, to free his family and seek revenge, he happens upon an eccentric Arab sheik who wants to race his white Arabians in the Roman Circus. Judah immediately sees a problem with how the horses are positioned and also knows how to get the horses to work as a team. One horse was slower, but steady, so he moved her to the inside; and So it goes with coaches. They must be able to see special strengths and weaknesses and match them up into positions that utilize the best of each player for the best team outcome possible. Several years ago, a Utah State University football coach (who was fired that year) made a statement to the press that was very derogatory toward his team. They just cant play as a team, he stated, as if that problem were the responsibility of the individual h. players. Contrast that with the attitude of Coach Greg Marsden, who trains the Lady Utes gymnastic team. When the gymnastics team went up against Washington on January 17th and performed well, there was one player who did not improve on her previous weeks score senior Kelly Delaney. To quote her coach, She succumbed to the pressure of being the only senior.
