In game one at St. George, the Lady Badgers battled back from a 1 deficit, scoring three runs in the fourth inning, on their way to a 2 victory. Mandy Morrison al 9-- 3, hard-chargin- g, 2-- I HC Its been a wild week in sports. College basketball players doing the right thing rather than the selfish thing? Karl Malone gets suspended. And the Jazz are victorious anyway. The University of Utahs basketball team (and fans) have had quite a roller coaster ride. For the Crimson clothed Utes to be the underdogs for so many games on their way to the championship and to make it clear to the finals this year had pure blue blooded Cougars bleeding red! Everyone in Utah (with the exception of some nameless sports-casteout of the devil's advocate league) was cheering and celebrating each victory. g Then the started when word came out that their beloved coach was being offered mega-buck- s to turn his back on the program he had built (but without a national championship, the dynasty is still under construction) and lead their college teams where the Utes were headed. The wind blowing in Evanston Wyoming was actually the big sigh of relief coming out of Utah when Majeris announced his loyalty still resided at the University of Utah. Finally, a key freshman on that team, Britton Johnson decided that a goal set in childhood was more important than being a part of the certain championship action next year. In a world where balloon-heade- d high school jocks decide to bypass their educations for the glamour, dollars and lifestyle of professional basketball, Johnsons announcement was refreshing. rs nail-bitin- The big shots in the NBA office demonstrated their Bullish bias on Friday, April 0th. If you remember, on the Wednesday before, the Spurs were in town; their admiral, David Robinson guarding Malone a little too close (and received a foul against him) when Malone went to make a little elbow room. The blow to Robinsons head was replayed fast forward, slow motion, and every possible angle analyzed for three days following the incident. Malone wasnt jumping, didn't have hiselbows above his waist so I ask you. What was David Robinsons head doing clear down there in the first place? Besides, it seems to me that someone needs to remember the kindergarten lesson to look both ways before stepping into the path of a man with a mission. Anyway, back to the NBA leaderships bias for the Bulls... The offending incident happened Wednesday night. They could have called a suspension and penalty that night. They could have called it Thursday morning after having the night to sleep on the decision. But Noooo! I believe they weren't going to do anything...until the Bulls lost their game Thursday night, and all of a sudden, were at a disadvantage for playoff home court advantage with the Jazz. In a move certain to put the Jazz at a disadvantage, the NBA announced the suspension just after the Jazz practice on Friday ended, ensuring that the Jazz would not be able to practice and build a strategic game plan without Malone in the line up prior to the Friday night game against a team out of Los Angeles. The only thing the NBA could not do to make the situation worse was to switch the LA teams from Clippers to Lakers! A couple of people have told me that I'm really stretching to come to this conclusion. But what other conclusion is there? A suspension decision coming down for an unintentional action is a bad decision to begin w ith. A fine might have been appropriate to send a calm it down message. To time a suspension announcement to prevent a team from making the best of a bad situation through at least one practice (when there were two possible, if the decision wasnt tied to the Bulls loss) Puleeceze! Give me a BRREAKKK! It was a pretty cheap shot. Besides, the severity of the penalty is very similar to Shaquille O'Neals very intentional assault on Greg Ostertag at the beginning of the season. O'Neal was suspended for one game. To equate an unintentional blow during a very' physical competition to rt an unprovoked assault demonstrates the bias even further! The Jazz were not supposed to win Friday nights game the deck had been deliberately stacked against them by the high-up- s in the league. The rest of the Jazz team show ed the league that Karl Malone is not the only man on the Jazz team w ith a championship mission. They rebounded like never before. They beat the Clippers YES!! soundly, without Malone even allowed in the building. RIGHT IN YOUR FACE! I exclaimed, as I watched the wrap-uSadly, the Jazz were all tuckered out from their full-o- n play Friday, and after flying to Minnesota, got beat Saturday. Well the Bulls lost again Monday, and again on Thursday, so the NBA officials chicanery didnt quite determine the outcome of the finals, yet. As of now, the beginning of the playoffs, the Jazz still control their own destiny. A little more "nothing's going to stop us" attitude is in order by the whole Jazz team, (the w ay they played the Clippers without Malone), and they will be unstoppable. With this full-o- n play by the entire team, and Karl Malone at his stellar play of 1997-9which is exceeding last years MVP standards, and we Utahns can cheer our champions all the way through the finals!
