Show course, weeds. After removing plants, till or spade the ground and plant any of these — beans, corn, summer squash, cucumbers, potatoes, beets, carrots, cabbage family, lettuce, zinnias, gladiolas, marigolds, nasturtiums — anything that produces in 90 days orless. Continue planting corn until late July and feast on it until a hard frost. Fertilize well with nitrogen; for good pollination plant one sin- gle variety of corn in a spiral or in a block ofthree or four short rows. The Time-Life Gardener’s Guide on summer vegetables offers other tips for growing corn: g@ When plants are 6-8 inchestall, thin them to 8 inches apart by snipping extras off at groundlevel, letting roots rot in the ground. m Rake between rows, breaking up clods, smoothing soil, getting out weeds. w For strong cornstalks pull loose earth up and around them with a hoe, forming 3-inch mounds on both sides. Don’t work too close to the stalks — you can injure the roots. Repeat the hilling process when stalks are about a foottall. Place lettuce in the shadeof taller plants or build a temporary shade structure that wili keep it cool in hot weather. (Heat causes bitterness). Use tomato cages for tall peas, summer squash and other lightweight viney vegetables to climb on — they save space, keep plants from flopping and sprawling everywhere and make harvesting easier. @ Perennials that have finished blooming and offer no virtue except filling space. These include Shasta daisies, valerian, feverfew and Oriental poppies. Whack them way back and marvel at the space suddenlygained (like a junky closet you just cleaned). Pull out feverfew that have yellow centers. w Yellow marigolds with pansies Two common mistakes that cost Frances Jones ‘ time, money and quality are improper pruning of trees and flowering shrubs and too close spacing of Standard-Examiner a 4 y correspondent and the common early-blooming daisies — both will have dropped plenty of seeds for next year. Loosen the soil and put in annuals. (A good selection is still available in garden centers). Or plant some better-liked perennials. Delphiniums, if cut back, will sprout new growth and bloom again in the fall. I find now a good time to dig and divide overgrown Shasta daisy clumps. Separate each rooted stem and plant at least a foot apart. When valerian threatens to take over, dig it out and send it to roomier beds. This prolific spreader assures fts survival by both “clump-spread” and self-sown seeds. w Dead-head geraniums, calendulas, snapdragons and all other unsightly specimens. wCut mildew-ridden columbine and sun-scorched bishop’s weed back to ground level and watch them put out vibrant new growth. Trim straggly pansies and petunias. w Scatter sweet William seeds in appropriate places. m Perk up a plain fence, patio or deck with hanging baskets or other container gardens, (You can find both containers and plants at bar- gain prices). In large containers includea tall plant such as dracaena, ornamental grass or cannalily. For outstanding design, choose one dominant and one secondary hue plus one to three other colors for accents. Hanging baskets are splendid in just one color and kind offlower, but if you want combinations, try these: g@ White fibrous begonias or petunias with purple, blue or fuchsia lobelia. mimpatiens ranging from very light pink to deep fuchsia, or from light blush to brighter salmon or coral. all types ofplants. Big bold gloriosa daisies garner admiring looks even from eyes that don’t normally focus on flowers. They need full sun, plenty of space and no intrusion from pink-fuchsia-lilac hues. (If you wantthe latter in the same bed, position them at the opposite end ofthe yellow- gold-orange section). For a stunning show, team gloriosa daisies with any of the follow- ing against a redwood fence: yellow/gold/orange/rust daylilies, marigolds and chrysanthemums. The most stunning are zoned or banded in shades of gold, orange, russet or mahogany and may be 5-7 inches wide. The varied colors and designs are all harmonious with each other. To assure a medley ofdifferent gloriosa daisies, grow them from a packet of seeds. (You'll have to wait a year for blooms, but will have dozens of plants to give away). Or:dead-head desired speci- mens, turn face down in a suitable seedbed, and you’ll have volunteers next spring. While their color is brilliant, cut some “plate of gold” yarrow for indoor arrangements. Also gathercat- tails now. If you wait too long, they'll explode in a messy, uncon- trolled frenzy all over the house. Cattails are great line material for flower arrangements using sunflow- _ ers, gloriosa daisies or yarrow. While daylilies are blooming, find outstanding varieties in your community and arrange to get starts of your favorites. Attach permanent labels giving name, color and height.
