Show f Lakeside Review, August Horses, Flowers, Kids Honored of County Fair FARMINGTON For the past week, you could practically find the Davis County Fair by following the horses. There were six events directly involving horses. The FFA and horse show was held Thursday. A cowboys jackpot rodeo was held Friday instead of the regular quarter horse show. The d performance horse show and the paint horse shows were held Saturday, as well as the junior rodeo and horse races at the Davis Stadium in the Davis County Fairgrounds at Lagoon. Preliminary horse races were held Tuesday and Friday. The final races were held on Saturday. All these horse events added to the excitement of one of the best fairs held in the history of the Davis County Fair. The county fair started on a very small scale in 1925, yet it became an annual event, except for two years during World War II. By 1958, the fair had an official fair manager. Dick Taylor, the current fair manager is the seventh in succession since that time. This is Taylors second year in that position. He assisted the previous fair manager, Ed Rogers. The Davis County Rodeo royalty saddled up for the fair in style. Diane Hooper reigned as the queen with Vicki Vest and Annette Cox as her attendants. Flower lovers had to get into the Davis Pavilion - , , - 4S'H 2J1, 19110 i; l &.- - - - early after the judging to see the beautiful collection of blooms at their peak at the flower show for the fair. The August heat and conditions in the exhibit hall were not good for the delicate buds and blooms. Two of the top awards went for dahlias and gladiolus blooms. An arrangement of gladiolus Legends, grown by Valerie T. Piepkorn of Sunset, won a class award and trophy. Another class award went to Edward P. Ritter of Kaysville for his Brookside Snowball dahlias. There was a whole table lined with many colors of dahlias and gladiolus that were beautiful to behold. On other tables there were mini roses, Chinese lanterns, Honesty Money plants and even ribbon winning cactuses. The purpose of the flower show is educational; to raise the standards of floriculture grown by amateur gardeners, and to develop aesthetic sense of their use besides pleasing the public. The five points of consideration for the flowers were: form, color, substance and abudance of bloom; size in accord with the species or variety; foliage and stem; distinction of species or variety; and condition. The Davis pavilion also contained an extensive art exhibit, clothes, handicrafts and a taste tempting variety of fruits, vegetables and baked goods. 4-- ar MEETING at the water trough at the Davis County Fair are competitors in the dairy and beef cattle judging, Craig Hansen (left) with his Jersey and rex Carter, leading his Limousin cow.
