I.ak(si(lc Review, August 28, 19110 Clothing Thieves Concerned Parents Discuss Intersection parents concerned their children as West to attend school A group of about the safety of ROY they cross 1900 were told Tuesday the City Council will study the problem and the city budget to determine the best solution. The council also promised to have sidewalks installed near the in- tersection. Larry Peterson, a splkesman for the parents, said elementary school students living in the Herefordshire area had been bused last year, but school district budget cutbacks meant they would have to walk to school this year. There are now more than 100 children under 10 years old who have to cross 1900 West at 4400 South, Peterson said. Traffic counts have shown that 17,000 cars pass through that intersection each day and there are 1,800 per hour going through there at the times the kids are crossing, he said. A; traffic light exists at the intersection, he said, but its timing is very irregular. The timing varies between eight and 20 seconds, Peterson said. People in cars are trying to make the light, and a child might across. get caught halfway West from to 4400 South but said that amount of money may not be enough to do the entire project. The council agreed to authorize Reeves to start the project at 4400 South and work south to 4800 South so sidewalk will be installed near 4400 South as soon as possible. Peterson said the parents agreed on a list of possible solutions to the safety problem at the intersection. ' He said they feel the best solution would be to place a crossing guard at the intersection at a cost to the city of between $1,700 and $2,400 a year. This would probably not be perPeterson said. He said the manent, Weber school board had indicated to the parents that if people scream long enough, the voted leeway will pass, and more buses would be provided by the tax hike. He said the parents second choice was to have the speed limit reduced on 1900 West, which is a state highway, and have warning signs and flashers installed. The final proposal from the parents was to get the state to change the timing on the traffic light. Mayob Joseph Dawson said if the speed limit were lowered it should be changed through the 4800 South intersection also. 1900 BRING US Get Away Thieves broke into a Roy dry cleaning business and got away with $1,500 worth of clothing last week according to police reports. Ambulance Non-Ro- y Charges Increased ROY The City Council Tuesday raised ambulance fees for non-Ro- y residents and tabled petitions to vacate a street and rezone a piece of property. City Attorney Roger Dutson recommended tabling action on a petition from Jack Eves requesting that the city vacate a street at 5150 S. 1900 W. Dutson said the issue would depend of the council concerning rezoning of Eves property at the same address. He said the property is not actually a street but a piece of land the width of a street which had been deeded to the city. Dutson said there was some disagreement between himself and Eves regarding what the fair market value of the property should be. Eves was not present at the meeting. The council agreed to table action on the petition and also later decided to table Eves request for rezoning of his property at 5150 S. 1900 W, Dutson said Eves had presented no plan for development of the property on the decision and said the council had adopted a rule of thumb that all rezone requests be accompanied by a preliminary plan of the proposed development. The council approved a change in the ambulance fees to require non-Ro- y residents to pay the current commercial ambulance rate, about $110 per call, even when the person is involved in an accident within Roy City limits. The rate would remain $50 per call for Roy residents, including calls outside the city limits for Roy residents. In other action, the council awarded a contract to Eddie L. Shaw Construction Co. to install curb, gutter, sidewalk and storm sewer along the east side of 3100 West from 5200 South to 4800 South and for curb and gutter on the west side of the street. Shaws bid, $66,072, was the low bid. The city has received approval for a $19,000 grant from the Department or Housing and Urban Development for the project. Sunset Changes Curfew Law for 17-Year-O- Triaminic Syrup L- - r E Reg. 63 The Sunset City Council SUNSET has approved a change in the citys curfew law to allow 17 and olds to be out until midnight. Police Chief Daryl Conger said the ordinance formerly required all those 18 and under to be indoors between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Drug Arrest The new ordinance states those who are 17 and 18 years old must be off the streets from midnight until 5 a.m. and maintains the former hours for those 16 years of age and younger. Conger said all police chiefs in Davis County agreed about a month ago to urge City Councils to adopt the new ordinance in order to make the rules the same from one community to the four-hors- 4 PEN - $143 Reg. $2.13 $4.98 Value Reg. 98 ALL GARDEN RITE Coughs VtoJ LEN?
