Exchange Student Kicks Ball Country Mile By BLISS FULLMER Staff Writer It was on registration day that Coach Ernie Jacklin heard about a foreign exchange student who had come all the way from Johannsburg, South Africa to attend Roy High School. A young 18 year old was living with Mr. and Mrs. Ike Runchel, and it was rumored that he could kick a football a country-milROY e. South African Graham McFarlane, a with a heavy British accent had played rugby in his native country, but had never even seen a football game. It was his adopted nephews Todd and Jeff soft-spoke- n on a football at Runchel, who first saw him tee-of- f Sandridge Park and boot it sixty yards bare footed. They encouraged him to try out for football, and the word soon got around. Todd and Jeff live in Syracuse. Todd plays sophomore football at Clearfield High. Coach Jacklin talked with the Runchels and their Adopted Son, and made an appointment to watch him kick the ball. He was barefooted that day too and after several flawless boots the coach could hardly hide his excitement. Why dont you try out for our football team? he said, almost in a whisper. McFarlane witnessed his first football game when Roy played Bountiful and kicked his first point-afte- r for the Royals. (He missed on a second try). Now in Region One action, he has scored six consecutive points for the P.A.T. The coach also has him booting for the junior varsity team just for practice. Coach Jacklin is striving to season his young kicker for future ball games. McFarlane could one day play college ball, if he keeps improving, says the coach. He has a real good attitude and great potential. He can probably kick the longest field goal in Utah high school football, added the Royal Mentor. Graham kicks better with his shoe off, but high school rules prohibit bare-fokicking. They wont even let him kick in a tennis shoe. The rules emphatically state that each player must wear a football-type shoe. McFarlane is the son of Neville and Audrey McFarlane of Johannesburg, South Africa, and attended the King Edward VII High School there. Maybe we better watch this lad. And all of Northern Utah is beginning to take notice of that kid from South Africa. He is already getting extra applause from the Royal fans, and some day he may be called in to kick a 58 yard field goal like he did last week in practice, bare footed. 773-503- 1 OPEN FRI.
