Children are encouraged to come and Musician In Solo - Richard Holbrooks KAYSVILLE musical talent was uncovered at about age 6: My sister had a piano teacher who would call out the notes, then play them, Holbrook, a bass soloist, recalled. I learned which note went with which tone; I could sing them on perfect pitch. Holbrook, 29, has sung solos in the Ogden and Davis County since a junior high school student. His next solo performance will be in what is probably Davis Countys first Messiah sing-iHe will have the lead bass part, and sing .under the direction of his voice teacher, Lyneer C. Smith, director of the Weber State College Singers The will be held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday sing-i- n at - the Kaysville Crestwood Stake Center, 555 N. 100 E. ; The public is invited to bring a score and join the chorus of the event. n. 'When it comes to Messiah, Holbrook feels too many singers are concerned with the technical aspects, at the expense of the feeling. Z Youve got to be concerned with voice technique, he said. And some of the runs are challenging. I keep the flotes correct, but I dont go overboard with the technical aspect. I I let myself sing it right, and the feeling comes. He added that after singing solo parts for so many years without a score, he knows the parts well. Qf all the music in the oratorio, his favorite is a soprano solo, Rejoice Greatly one that requires a great deal 3 I wish Santa a Merry Christmas and put in their Christmas request. His preferred way is to have someone sing the song, then repeat the words, which he memorizes phrase by phrase. Then he learns the music again. Another way is by recording the music, and taking notes in Braille. He plays the music, reads and words and memorizes. Ive been around music all my life, he said. I have sung in the Ogden High a capella singers and the Weber State a capella choir." He earned two degrees, both cum laude from Weber State, one in social work and another in music education. Playing the guitar and singing at socials has been a frequent activity for him, and has increased his repetoire of songs. This Easter, he will perform in the Elijah oratorio, and he has perand formed in Mozarts Requiem others. Nearly always his solos go as planned. He says he always arrives early just to be sure. Once though, all plans went astray when an accompanist got the starting time of a performance confused. Holbrook was to have performed twice. Instead he waited and waited. Just as the service was ending, in walked the accompanist. So Holbrook sang the closing song. I didnt sing both songs, he said. I was glad to sing just one. of vocal technique and 0QJMIMM91I l,l elefc V JM an QGWEJ b utp jm "IT mttft. lUR fijpc.iQfi iJB; (iujrJ and Reserve teams make helps them work better foryou! n. J&Js...
