Show P Loktsid Review, July 8, 1981, Pag 38 Collection Proves Dolls Not Just for Little Girls By LYNDIA GRAHAM ' Review Correspondent LAYTON Dolls, those wonderful things little girls dreams are made of. Little girls and grown women, too, according to Donna Petro of Layton. Mrs. Petro, who has more than 2000 dolls, has been collecting dolls and miniatures for many years now and says she loves them more each year. Her first memory of any doll is full of nostalgia. When I was 2 years old my aunt sat me on a porch and let me hold her sons beautiful doll, she said. It was an Armond Marseille doll and is now very special to collectors. She only let me hold it long enough to take my picture and then snatched it away. Mrs. Petro has that special picture. Before her aunt died she gave her the doll and it became the first of the major part of her collection. She saw an article in the paper and called to see if she might visit a doll collector in Ogden, Mrs. Rose Nalder, and that visit really sparked the idea of dolls as a full time hobby. As her love for collecting grew, so did the space needed to keep the lovely dolls she accumulated. Glass cabinets and even spare rooms soon became full as she purchased rare antiques and modern dolls of every description. She has a wax doll called the Toy Maker which she ordered form Lewis Sornson, a famous wax artist from California. She waited two years for that special doll to be made. Sornson sponsors a national doll club to which Mrs. Petro belongs. Mrs. Petro also has several hand carved originals of Lewis Smith, who before his death, was a famous dollmaker from Murray. Some in this collection are identical to those Smith donated to the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum in Salt Lake City. Through the friends she has made in doll collecting Mrs. Petro has received many rare and precious dolls as gifts. She has several especially fine pieces which were given to her upon the death of two of her friends before the rest of their collections were put up for sale. They include some original Campbell Soup dolls, a set of the presidents of the United States, and three fine bisque dolls made around the turn of the century. She also experiences much joy in giving dolls from her collection to her friends who are collectors. I like to see their expressions when I It really give them a doll, she said. tickles me." While traveling, many of her friends send her dolls from all over the world. depicting a pioneer family at home. It She has received them from Israel, Egypt, Indonesia, England and other countries. One especially unusual doll is called a Golly woggle and comes from Europe. Her five children also surprise her occasionally with an addition to her collection and even her nine grandchildren get into the act. For Christmas, they gave her a collection of Miss Piggys. She has apple heads, nylon stocking dolls, baby dells, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philips, 10 Shirley Temples, witches, Barbies, Dr. Doo Little, W.C. Fields, an old Emmett Kelly, and the list goes on and on. Its a hobby that you start out innocent in but then the bug really bites. But you she says with a chuckle.' never get lonely or bored because is complete with a patchwork quilt on the bed, a chamberpot, bear rug, food grinder, butter churn and a mouse trap under the bed. The dollhouse in her living room is still being furnished. Doing minatures is a constant hunt." she says. Im always looking. One almost expects little people to walk out from the rooms so completely are the rooms furnished. The kitchen drawers open to expose silverware. On the counter is a plate of fig newtons and oreo cookies. Deviled eggs the size of pin heads are on a plate in the eating area. An actual tintype of Mrs. Petros mother hangs on the living room wall. She is waiting for lace to come from England to make curtains for the bedroom and plans on blinds for the attic. On the front porch hangs an old fashioned swing, a tiny puppy is licking up milk from an overturned pail. And all of the flagstone on the outside is hand cut and carefully placed. Mrs. Petro belongs to several doll clubs and enjoys the association with other collectors at the meetings. She points out that doll collecting and working with miniatures is not limited to women and many men in Utah belong to the Federated Doll Club, which is a national club. She also shares her enthsiasm for this fascinating hobby with others by speaking to groups and displaying some of her favorites. Does she recommend it to others to fill empty hours? Definitely yes, she says. It has brought a lot of happiness to me. I hope others will begin to enjoy it too." About the only type she doesnt have is a rare tin head and she is still looking for one of those. It takers alot of reading for Mrs. Petro to keep up on all the different types of dolls, when and where they were made and something of their history. She has quite a library of books to help her with that area of collecting. She adds to her collection constantly and is willing to buy old dolls from local people who may have some they might want to sell. Her most recent addition is a very life-lik- e model of John Wayne. Mrs. Petro found that doll collecting led her to another fascinating hobby., that of collecting miniatures and building and furnishing dollhouses. ' So intricate are some of her houses that they take several months to put together and furnish. She has won several awards and ribbons at the Utah State Fair with several of her more notable ones. She won first place at the fair with Petrofesas Country Store which depicts an old fashioned store and post office. The details are so realistic that even the tiny letters in the post office boxes are all addressed and stamped. Behind the miniature counter are ledgers and account books, small bolts of cloth are on the shelves, and even eyeglasses, only long were made by her for the little shop. Her "Log Cabin received the Best of Show in 1979. It, too, is very realistic, No Spa in Weber Can Compare to Davis County Come See. & Us.
