His Hollywood smile is vibrant and his face comes straight off a box of . Wheaties. His name is Mark Pearce and hell captain this years Viking ship with plans of dropping anchor somewhere in the state playoffs. Trying to better last years state final season, Pearce plans to run a attack fueled by team speed and youth at every position. Ive done some scouting and were one of the fastest teams in 4-- A 3-- A wide-ope- n the state, said the first-yea- r coach. "And thats the whole team, not just one or two positions. Pearce coached two years at Bear River High before taking over for veteran coach Wade Bender at Viewmont and says hes looking forward to the challenge and the pressure. Theres more of a personal pressure when you take a new job like this, said Pearce. They say it takes three years to develop a winning program, but I just dont have I want it this year. the patience In terms of coaching philosophy, Pearce says his main goal is for the players to learn football and have fun. Winning is important, but -- Aside from bis regular coaching duties, Pearce takes time each week to do some public relations work for his program by hosting a parent booster club meeting. Pearce says the meetings really take the heat off because parents are allowed to discuss their views with him and get personally involved with the program. I try to get the parents involved because we need their help and so far its paid off rather well. I do my part by letting them know exactly why we run the program the way we do, he said. Although young, Pearce enters the job with top notch credentials. A native of Huntington Beach, Calif., Pearce came to Utah to play college football for the Utes in 1971. Before graduating in 1976, Pearce played a wide range of positions, including quarterback, which gave him the necessary knowledge to coach. He also served as assistant at Weber State College.
