Show suhml &91D(0IL0IiS Emery girls basketball season comes to an end with a record 14-- 6 Peacock Snorts Reporter by Hyan The Emery g.rls basketball season came to an end Friday night when they lost at home to Snow Canyon in the first round of the state playoffs After falling to Richfield in their last region game, the Lady Spartans were faced with having to play the third 44-3- 8 place team from Region 9 and the Lady Warriors were ready Snow- Canyon jumped out to a lead and although one by BreAnne LeRoy and Emery made two the other by Shannah Oviatt, the Spartans still trailed at the end of the quarter 10 9 The Warriors Lyndi Frei scored - 4-- 0 their 10 points in the quarter Chnstin Bott made a basket for Emery to start the second quarter and give the Spartans an lead. Another free throw by Powell was followed by two quick baskets by Bridgett Cox and Emery was back to within two, Snow Canyon made the last basket of the quarter, but Emery was wnthin striking distance, trailing Emery's defense picked up in the fourth quarter, but unfortunately so did their fouls Emery allowed the Warriors only two baskets, but Cox, Bott, and LeRoy all fouled out. As a result of their fouls, Snow Canyon converted by 23-2- 0 29-2- 29-2- 31-2- 7 Sports Reporter Its March Madness time in February for the Emery boys' basketball team. They finished second in Region 8 It was a successful year, but it doesnt seem successful because they failed to make the state tourna- Park City at the Spartan Center Saturday. The playoff game was held m Castle Dale because Emery finished first in Region 8. Park City was the Region 10 4th place team. Brad Roundy led the Spartans with 24 points, eight rebounds. four blocked shots, and three steals. Brad Stilson finished with 12 points and nine assists and Steven Ewell got 11 points and five assists. It wfas a workmanlike effort for the Spartans who hit 50 percent of their shots, including seven The Miners were no pushovers, however. They came right at the Spartans early and led just one minute into the game. Then Roundy started getting the ball with good inside position. Emery scored eight straight points, six of them by Roundy, and 61-4- 4 44-3- 6 first-roun- ment. Emery returns a solid team next year with Powell, Bott, and Oviatt returning, among others. They should again challenge for the region championship and make next year an exciting year. The Castle Valley Activity Association Basketball Tournament will be held February 22nd and 23rd at Canyon View Jr High in Huntington. The games will be as follows 5-- Feb 22, Boys: 2 30, Mont vs Harmon Canyonview. 5.30, San Rafael vs Helper The winners will play at 7 p m. on Feb 23 Girls: Feb. 22, 4 p m San Rafael vs Canyon View. 7 pm. Helper vs Mont Harmon. The Spartans outscored Park City 13 7 and led at the half 25-2- 0. The Spartans and Miners traded baskets the entire third quarter. The Spartans increased their lead, however, thanks to two by Klint Anderson (who also hauled in six rebounds) and one by Ewell. Anderson scored all eight of his points m the quarter and Emery led at the end of the third. The Spartans put the game away in the fourth quarter. Interestingly, the offensive outburst came after one of Nic Emerys starters, Behunin, fouled out. With Emery leading and Behunin on the bench, Ewell hit a That was followed by another by Stilson. The third place game is at 4.00 Saturday and the championship game is at 8:00. TELCOM Mike Truman, is the son of Rick Truman and Lori Ann Anderson. He has 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Mike loves sports. He has been on the baseball team every year since he started All-St- ar playing baseball. He was a member of Canyon View's championship football team. He placed 2nd in the wrestling tournament in the 132 lb. weight class. He is currently the captain of Canyon View's varsity basketball team. He also participates in track. Mike is a good student and has been on the honor roll. Mike loves the outdoors and likes to hunt, fish, camp and ride horses and 4 wheelers. Mke has earned his Eagle Scout award. A highlight of his life was when he was chosen as a Jr. Olympic Ambassador by the Salt Lake Olympics Committe and at- tended the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Mike would like to attend college, serve an LDS mission and be married in the LDS temple San Rafael JH AD Seth Weber, 15, is the son of Merlin and Melody Weber of Ferron. Seth is a good student and is a member of the FFA program. Seth is a very friendly person who is always smiling. His favorite class is Seminary because its fun and easy. He likes to practice rodeo, ride motorcycles, and fish. Someday Seth would like to be a professional rodeo rider. He would also like to graduate from college. Jennifer Branson, 15, is the daughter of Jason and Trina Branson of Orangeville. Jennifer is an excellent student and is a member of the Readers Club. She is also a member of the High School Marcfrng Band and the Jr. High Jazz Band. Her favorite class is Info. Tech, because she loves working with computers. She is an optimistic, fun loving, energetic person. She would like to live in Florida and be a singer. She is looking forward to gettng a good education and getting married in an LDS temple. Margaret Olsen, the daughter of Arthur and Shannon Olsen of Castle Dale. Margaret is an excellent student and is a cheerleader. She is also a member of the FHA program. Her favorite classes are Seminary and being a T.A. because they are a lot of fun and are different from the rest of her classes. She is an energetic, fun person who everyone likes to be around. She likes to spend time with her friends and family, go boating, and water ski. Someday she would like to go to Europe. She is also looking forward to college, getting married in an LDS temple, and raising a family. 1'4. is Chris Peterson, 15, is the son of Ray and Nancy Peterson of Ferron. Chris an excellent student and was on the High School Golf Team last year. He is also a member of the school Jazz band. His favortie class is Science because its a lot of fun with Mrs. Jensen, and its easy. He is a nice, friendly, person. He likes to golf, fish, hunt, go camping, play sports, and go river rafting. Someday he would like to go sky diving. He wou'd also like to get a good job and go to college. Jessica has a 3.8 GPA She active in the Emery Spardetts for 3 years. She is the Vice Pres, of Novelty Routine, Vice Pres, for FFA, and a member of the National Honor Society. Her favorite classes are English and History. Her hobbies and interests are riding horses, riding being in pagaents. Bridi Hinkins 17, is the daughter of David and Lane Hinkins of Orangeville. She has a 3.8 GPA and class rank of 27. She is a member of the seminary council. Her favorite classes are drama, and English. She loves to sing, take road trips and competing in pageants. After graduation she plans on going to college, getting her degree in elm. education, getting manned and raise an honorable family. i f |
