Heart diseases, stroke and other blood vessel diseases claim 2,600 American lives every day. That amounts to an average of one cardiovascular disease-relatedeath every 33 seconds. Extracting an annual death toll of about 960,000, cardiovascular disease is, by far, the No. 1 killer of American men and women today. More than 40 percent of all American deaths are attnbutable to cardiovascular disease. In 1963, Congress officially recognized the need to focus national attention on heart health when it mandated that the president of the United States issue a proclamation annually designating February as American Heart Month. Since then the American Heart Association has worked with successive administrations in preparing the annual proclamation. The significance of American Heart Month is not that it is a time of intensified effort - the search for expanded knowledge, preventative measures, cures, new medicines and new technologies is always intense. Rather, American Heart Month is significant because it is a time for all Americans to learn about, recognize and appreciate the strides the American Heart Association and other noteworthy health organizations are making to reduce the deadly risks and consequences of cardiovascular disease. In 2000, the theme for American Heart Month is Be an American Heartsaver! To save a victim of cardiac arrest, every minute counts. Tragically, each day in America almost 1000 cardiac arrest victims die before they reach the hospital. This translates to almost 350,000 deaths annually or 95 percent who die before reaching the hospital. Approximately 70,000 lives could be saved each year if the percentage of survivors were increased from the current five percent to 20 percent or higher. During American Heart Month, the American Heart Association urges all Americans to learn how to help save the lives of cardiac arrest victims by knowing the following steps. 1. Know the warning signs of heart attack and cardiac arrest. Recognize a medical emergency when it occurs. The warning signs of a heart attack include: uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes; pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms; chest discomfort with lightheadedness, Saints in the PA Latter-da- y City. d Remember-frien- ds Aubree Kristine Guymon Bruce and Amy Guymon, of Cedar City, are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Aubree Kristine, on Jan. 19, 2000. Symptoms of cardiac arrest are different: the person collapses and loses consciousness, he or she stops normal breathing and loses pulse and blood pressure. One of the leading causes of cardiac arrest is heart attack. Other causes of cardiac arrest include electrocution, drowning, respiratory arrest, choking or trauma. 2. Call Upon recognizing heart attack or cardiac arrest symptoms, immediately call to access the emergency medical system. Too many people experience denial and, as a result, wait too long before seeking medical attention. 3. Begin CPR. To maintain vital blood flow to the heart and brain, which helps sustain the victim until defibrillation (electric shock to the heart) can be administered, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until emergency help arrives. By taking these three crucial steps, Americans can give sudden cardiac death victims a second chance at life. To learn more about what to do in the event of a cardiac emergency or how to prevent a heart attack call the American Heart Association office at (801) or visit our website wwwamericanheart.org.
