Moreover, the passage of fluids from the mouth to the stomach is also monitored by the nervous system, and this movement of fluid causes drinking to stop before the deficit in body fluid volume is corrected. One of the biggest problems facing athletic trainers is educating the athletes on hydration. Trainers tell them again and again how important it is to replace fluids appropriately, and yet, after agreeing that the message is important, they will then totally ignore the trainers advice. One of the many factors that contributes to insufficient drinking during exercise is the poor quality of the available beverages. For example, if the beverage is in Specialist . Only a few athletes consume enough fluids to almost totally offset their sweat losses. These athletes tend to be female, of tower body weight, and better overall hydrators. The larger male athletes obviously lose more sweat more during training, but when compared to the females, they also seem less likely to drink before exercise and need more guidance in understandingwhat and how much to drink during training. Most athletes do not drink enough during exercise. Some are afraid of gastrointestinal upset, some shun calories, and many others simply don't fully appreciate the value of staying well hydrated. Beverage temperature is very important in determining how much athletes will drink during exercise. Early clues to this effect were obtained many years ago when researchers observed that soldiers working under warm conditions in the field dramatically increased their voluntary fluid consumption when the water that was available to them was simply chilled. More systematic research conducted since then has revealed that water intake goes up by justbycoolingit. The concern by many has always been how cool or cold beverages affect the core temperature of the body. Although athletes will drink more of a cool beverage than a warm one, the temperature of the drink actually has no important effect on oore body temperature. Many studies have also shown that dehydrated older individuals feel less thirsty and consume less fluid than do their younger counterparts. This is true even when older and younger people experience the same degree of dehydration. As people age, we seem to lose the ability to appropriately sense the loss of blood volume that accompanies dehydration, and we respond by drinking less. The fact is that people, particularly athletes need to hydrate regularly and with the right kinds of beverages. Regular consumption of fluids during athletic events will not only lead to better health but also better 40-8- 0, Orthodontic Treatment CARBON HIGH BOYS FOOTBALL 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. I this ad for Phillips Petroleum Co. 10:00 a.m. j in from Monday-Thursda- y 381-216- about smiles. In addition to the physiological mechanisms described many athletes choose not to drink because they do not like the sloshing of fluid in their stomachs. Other factors that may affect the completeness of rehydration include ease of access to the beverage on the field or sidelines, a design of the beverage container John Open that makes it easy to drink chilled and flavored, drinking can be more than doubled when compared to plain unchilled water. Optimizing the flavor and providing flavor variety can increase fluid consumption even more. |
