Show 6 September 2001 Carbon and Emery County Sports Guide East Carbon could provide fans with second baseball crown East Carbon High's tradition of having a strong baseball program will continue with the return of several star players alongwith some up and coming underclassmen. Coach Todd McFarland is confident that the Vikings will face the 1A fall baseball schedule with their heads held high. Its hard to go out on a limb and say where weil be at the end of the season. But I am fairly certain that we will be right there at the top or very' near to it," comments the East Carbon head coach. The Vikings very well could be the lx.st team in 1A this fall, w'hich could be a double treat for Carbon County fans. If East Carbon could win the state crown, it would mean the county would have a lock on both the 1 A and 3A title in the same year. In 1A fall baseball, which in most cases has been a substitute for football during the hanest season for the smaller high schools carry in 16 the state, a team can players. Some 1A schools barely get enough partici- pants to field a team, while some of the small private schools from the Wasatch Front always get a lot of people out. Dr. The East Carbon team has the allowed 16 members, including some very good players. Coming back from a great season last year is Pat Hansen, who will be the leading pitcher for the Vikings. Also back is Tony McFarland, who will play short stop. McFarland has spent the summer playing for the Helper entry in the Salt Lake Valley American Legion League. On first base will be Cameron Piaz. Coach McFarland feels Piaz will be the leadoff batter for the Viking season. Also back from last year will be Joey Alberts alongwith sopho- mores Sampson Leonard and Jesse Stewart. The season schedule will be tougher and there are some real powers in the state. McFarland feels that the strength in Region 18, where East Carbon plays to qualify for state, will be Dugway and Wendover. But wTe will be right there, too, adds the Viking baseball coach. As far as the state goes, McFarland points out that some shifts in power have been going on for various reasons. Waterford and Valley will probably be the best teams in the Steven O. Tuttle Personalized Care by an Optometric Physician state, but Green Rivers program may not be quite as strong. Green River lost considerable strength to graduation and the teams top returning player moved to Colorado because of a change in his fathers employment. But the private schools seem to be making moves toward being some of the best teams. 1 have w'atched the way some of these private schools recruit, explains McFarland. It would be nice to be able to do what they do; its the reason they are becoming so strong. Private schools like Waterford literally have no boundaries when it comes to getting quality' players. If the coaches can convince players to come to their schools, they can get them from anywhere theyw'ant. Despite the competition and the graduation of five seniors from last years squad, McFarland knows the Viking team will persevere. One of the things the coach has done with scheduling is to bring new teams into the that East Carbon has not played in years or, for that matter, ever before. Games against Piute, Wayne and Escalante are scheduled. The three teams all play in the tough Region 15, where perennial power Valley resides. With 35 schools in class 1A, by far the most in any class in the state, it will definitely be a dog fight to see who will take the crown. pre-seas- MEDICAL SERVICES: fSoflDecje Comprehensive Eye Exams Medical Treatment of Glaucoma of Lasik Surgery of Cataract Surgery season' Selection of High Quality Frames Childrens Frames Contact Lens Services PROVIDER FOR MOST INSURANCES: Medicaid - USP - PEHP - UMWA - Educators Mutual - Value Care Blue CrossBlue Shield - Electric Mutual - CBSA - Metlrfe Vision - Etc.
