Show September 2001 Carbon and Emery County Sports Guide 7 Green River baseball has tradition to uphold Green River Boys Baseball has a winning tradition which they hope to continue this year. The team has a record of four wins and one loss as of Aug. 22, I have been the baseball coach in Green River since 1986, stated Coach Dale Richards. This season we will play 19 games before the tournament starts. We are a young team. My pitchers are young. We have two seniors and four juniors on the team and all the rest are underclassman. We only have 13 players on the team. Our only seniors are Kody King at third base and Kevin Keele in center field and he will also pitch a little. But beingyoung doesnt mean the team wont compete for the big crown once again. Well be pretty competitive for as young as we are, our only loss so far this season has been to stated Richards. Their coach also coaches Waterford, Bingham High in the spring. I was talking to him before the game and told him we were young and I wasnt sure how we would do and he said, Youre Green River and youll play us well no matter for the kind of baseball program we have here. We lost to Waterford All my boys are titters, they are all hitting pretty good right now. If the front of the line isnt hitting then the back picks it up; if the back isnt hittingthen the front picks it up. Even though we are young and make a few mistakes, the team is doing a great job. Our base running should improve as the season progresses. Everyone shines on this team at some time. I have been pleased with my young pitchers and my catchers look good they have thrown people out and picked people off. Coach Stan Parsons is the assistant coach for baseball and I named to the team, said Coach Richards. The smallest schools in the state belong to the 1A classification, but they also have the most schools of any division with 35. Most of those institutions'are able to field baseball teams each fall. Some of the teams are almost pick up teams, but schools like Valley, East Carbon, some of the Salt Lake Private Schools and many others put together excellent squads that produce many quality players. The Pirates have always been one of those quality teams. This year the team consists of seniors, d base and Kevin Kody help him during basketball season, "said Richards. Since 1996 the Green River boys baseball record is 89 wins and 19 losses. These players are good kids to work with. We lost a couple of players who moved, one was a pitcher who was throwing 81 miles an hour as a freshman. These losses really hurt but we are optimistic about this year and looking forward to a great sea- Included also are juniors, 6-- 2. son. what This was a real compliment Last week we took 5th in the Eagle Patriot Tournament Gabrin Ekker and Dane Richards were King-thir- Keele-cent- field. er r, Kedric Ren short stop, Gabrin Eldcer-shod Shaun pitcher, field, Bayles-catche- Hatt-le- ft stop, pitcher, rt base, Brady-secon- out- field.
