Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday September 4, 2001 5A Emery County PORTS Spartans fall in frustrating, disappointing game By RYAN PEACOCK Sports Reporter The Emery High football team went into its game Friday after clobbering Canyon View a week earlier. They were facing a Dixie team that didnt win a game last year and had a losing streak. All the signs pointed to an Emery win, but games arent decided in signs, they are decided on the 41-- 0 10-ga- field. The Spartans were blown ay by an energetic, boisterous Dixie team 33-- 0 in a frustrating, disappointing game. The frustration came because of turnovers and injuries (three of Dixies touchdowns aw came directly from Emery turnovers), and the disappointment came because of mental and physical breakdowns the Spartans hadnt experienced this year. Neither team could get anything going early, but the Flyers got a big break w hen Emerys punt returner fumbled the kick and Dixie recovered it on Emerys line. 10-va- rd The Spartan defense held for two plays, but Dixies quartertouchback ran for a down just seconds into the second quarter and Emery trailed 7-- 0. The Spartans struck back. Using a strong running attack Emery gained about four yards per play. Fullback Josh Sharp gained 27 yards on six plays. .The Spartans ran 14 plays and got clear down to Dixies 18 before another turnover crashed Emerys hopes. This time the Flyers intercepted a pass and returned it to their 40 yard line. They went on drive that their own 1 in another .touchdown just before halftime. at the break. .Emery trailed the score, Despite Emery had better statistics and had played 14-- 0 better overall in the first half Emery had 101 yards and Dixie only had 80. The Flyers caught up quick, though, in the second half. Dixies first play went for 24 yards. Two plays later the Flyer running back cut back and gained 33 yards. Four plays later Dixie scored on a run. Emery trailed 21-The big blow came just one minute later when Emery had to punt from their own 22. Dixie returned the punt 54 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was no good, but Emery trailed 27-- 0 and all the wind seemed to be out of the Spartan sails. The Spartans kept plugging away, but their next drive ended in another turnover this one a fumble on Dixies 26 yard line. The Flyers drove again and on the 1 1th play they scored on run. Garrett Swenson a blocked the extra point and Emery trailed 33-Emerys next drive ended in their fifth turnover of the game another interception. The Spartans got the ball back on Dixies first turnover of the game a fumble with 3:52 left in the game. But there wasnt enough time for Emery to score and the game ended in the 33-- 0 shutout. The Flyers had eight possessions: Two punts, five touchdowns, and a fumble. Although disappointed, the Spartans didnt feel as if they had really been beaten so badly. They know that turnovers, penalties, and mistakes cost them the game, but they still feel like they could beat the Flyers if they ware to meet again. Emery has a big test this 0. 0. His foot was also sticking out at an impossible gerous than football? Hockey? Rodeo? Javelin catching? The answer may surprise you. The most dangerous sport, based on number of visits to emergency rooms, is basketball. Of the 2.6 million sports injuries per year, 447,000 (17.1 percent) are from basketball. OK, that may not surprise you that much. After all, theres a lot of banging and jumping in basketball. So maybe our kids should stay out of both basketball and football, just to be safe. Maybe they should stick to langle. sports. By RYAN PEACOCK Sports Reporter When I was playing high school football I saw a horrific injury in practice. , A player was hit high by one player and low by other. The impact twisted his leg and , I He was ;crutches non-conta- ct on for pionths and never jplayed football again. As horrible as the injury looked and as bad as it was for the player, he said he would have played football again if he could have. Remembering his injury got me to hinking about sports injuries. I knew a high school kid who wanted to play football. He was 6 4 and .weighed around 250, but his mom .wouldnt let him play because she was ;afraid he might get hurt. She said it was OK to play basketball and soccer hut football was too dangerous. I I know that people get hurt In almost 1 It I levery sport, but I wanted to know If foot-Iba- ll was really that much more than all those others. I What I found was Interesting. Fbot-'ba- ll is the third most dangerous sport, not the firtj What could be more dan dan-Igero- us Well, number two on the list of injuries is cycling. And what could be more than cycling? It has 421.000 injuries per year (16.1 percent). Football has only 271,000 injuries (10.3 percent). Closely following football are baseball and softball injuries at 245,000 (9.4 percent). The other big hurters are: 5. Roller blading'skateboarding 150.000, 5.7 percent non-conta- ct 6. Gymnastics cheerleading 146.000, 5.6 percent 7. Playground 137,000, 5.2 percent. 8. Snow sports 111,000, 4.2 percent. 9. Water sports 100,000, 3.8 percent. , 10. Soccer 95,000, 3.6 percent. 11. Trackrunning'exerclsing 94.000 3.6 percent. 12. Combative 61,000, 2.3 percent. r 13. Recreational 50,000, 1.9 per- cent. Other 290,000, 11.1 percent. Basically, any activity in which a person chooses to participate has risks. Some are more present than others, but there is always risk. Hundreds of thousands of injuries sounds really bad, but reports indicate that fewer than one percent of athletes who participate in sports actually are injured enough to go to an emergency room. So I am left wondering Why would someone say football is so dangerous while allowing their children to ride their bikes to the skate park or playground, then play basketball before they go swimming? It seems more dangerous to do those things than to play organized football with pads, coaches, referees, and EMTs standing by. I believe that any kid can benefit from playing football or basketball or any other sport in school. Sports teach things that kids cant learn anywhere else. I urge parents and kids to participate In sports. Practice, play, perform, and bring honor to yourself and your 14. family. Dont be afraid of injuries. Either because less than one percent of athletes are injured or because anyone can be Injured participating in any activity. The fear will only prevent you from learning and growing and you shouldnt deny yourself that By WAYNE GUSTAVESON Recreational boating crowds are thinning and weather is cooling. It promises to be a great fall with an inh credible number of stripers and bass to catch. In the interest of getting as many fish harvested as possible here is w'hat to expect. Stripers move shallow (30 feet) and look for food early in the day. If they boil they are easily seen and caught on surface lures. If just one or two show on top the whole school is probably nearby and will respond quickly and without fail to the dying flutter of a falling shad (jigging spoon) while they are in early morning search mode. Every time stripers go shallow in search of food they are susceptible to both surface stick baits and jigging spoon techniques. This could be at two hour intervals all day long. Stay ready with both type lures ready to cast on a moments notice. Throw surface first and then follow that with the spoon. During the rest of the day bait fishing is probably best. I say probably because if shad are present in big enough numbers stripers will not eat anchovies. Cut bait will not substitute for the real thing. Anchovy bait is more likely to produce at Wahw'cap or Bullfrog! lulls than in the upper San Juan or Hite. Our studies show less shad this year than last meaning that anchovy fishing will be excellent this Fhll. Numbers of stripers seem higher and physical condition is declining. All these signs point to a huge fall harvest with small-mout- bait beingthe most consistent producer. On your September-Octobe- r trip be prepared to fish on top with surface lures, on bottom with jigging spoons and at mid depth with frozen anchovies. Be flexible, experiment and allow the stripers to respond to the technique that matches their mood at the time. Expect good fishing at all access areas. From Hite it is only necessary to go downstream as far as the junction of White, Farleys and Trachyte. From Halls or Bullfrog good fishing will be found uplake at Moki Canyon and wall and downlake at mouth of Halls Creek and main channel walls downstream. At Wahweap the dam has recently produced good catches as have the canyons in Padre bay. Smallmouth bass are common on main channel and main canyon steep rocky structure with larger size rocks. Use surface lures for a quick surface bite in the early morning shade and then switch to soft plastic tubes, grubs and senkos for action that will last all day long. Remember to keep all stripers limit of 2 caught. Keep a inch smallmouth bass. These great tasting fish are easy to catch and fun for all ages.
