Show IB Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday November 6, 2001 Emery County Jeanne Lemon Scovill The Senior of the Week representing Orangeville is Jeanne Lemon Scovill. She was born in Ferron on Sept. 6, 1928. She is the daughter of Arthur Andrew Lenton and Irene Ralphs Lemoa Grandparents on both sides helped in the settling of Perron. Jeanne has three sisters and one brother. She went to school at the Presbyterian Kindergarten, at Ferron graduated South Emery High from School, and attended Snow College. After one year at college, she met Claude Scovill. They were married on Mar. 8, 1948. Jeanne and Claude have five children; two boys and three girls. They also have 18 grandchildren. For a short time, Jeanne worked in Salt Lake City for Dr. Skidmore, taking care of his children. She also worked for Perron Mercantile and Louis Petersen. Jeannes hobbies are music; playing the piano and organ, quilting, embroidering, fishing, and when she was younger, she liked camping. Claude had several jeeps and she enjoyed riding in the jeeps for hunting, fishing, and the Jeep Posse. She tells of how the Jeep Posse used to put on fund raisers with scones and lamb frys in the city park during the summer. She and Claude both helped with these projects. Her love of the piano started in high school after her sister attended the Sherwood School of Photo by James Pat Kirkreit teaches art skills to students at Castle Dale Elementary. L. Davis Points of Light Local volunteer honored by governor Pat Kirkreit of Castle Dale was honored by Governor Michael 0. Leavitt with a Points of Light Award for her volunteer efforts during a ceremony at the state capitol on Oct. 31. Por the third year in a row Kirkreit has been teaching art classes each Friday at Castle Dale Elementary. Brigid Wickersham, a teacher at the as Kirkreits school, said Miss Pat students affectionately call her teaches voluntarily and provides the students with art supplies from her personal budget. Because of her enthusiasm, helpfulness, positive manner, and quick wit, the students have learned to love her and the art she brings with her, said Principal Geniel Huntington. She loves kids and the ability to teach kids art, said one student, speaking of the effect Kirkreits art classes have had on him. Since she has been coming, I look forward to coming to school. Governor Leavitt launched the Points of Light Award program in October of 2000 to honor Utahs most outstanding volunteers. Recipients are selected from nominations sent in by Utah residents. Music in Chicago. When her sister returned, she began teaching piano to Jeanne and several other people around Perron. Jeanne is a past president and district president of the American Legion Auxiliary in the 1950s. In 1996, Jeanne was awarded the Governors Silver Bowl award for work in the RSVP Band. Claude and Jeanne both are involved with the Emery County Senior Citizen Band. She plays the piano and he drives the bus transporting the band to various nursing homes and other organizational activities in this area, providing music for sing-a-long- s. She has held many jobs in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Da-y Saints, most of these were related to music. She and Claude served a mission in 1984-8- 6 in the Chicago, Illinois Mission. When they returned home, they were assigned to work in the Manti Temple where they served for six years. Jeannes husband, Claude, has written this poem about Jeanne entitled: A Sweet Lemon by Claude E. Scovill, 1993. My wife is a Lemon, Her family records show. She comes from a family of Lemons, But she wants me to know . That she is a sweet lemon, And she thinks its kinda neat, That one of her ancestors,-JameLemon, Married Martha Sweet. When you consider that mar- riage, And the children that they bore, That they become Sweet Lemons, Not sour ones anymore. So when she says shes a Sweet Lemon, And the facts are hard to beat, I really have to agree with her And say, she's kinda sweet! Cathedral Windows s As part of the Adult Sewing Clinics being offered by the Utah State University Extension Office in Castle Dale, a class on Cathedral Window Quilting was held on Oct. 25. Participants brought their sewing machines and tools to set up in the Museum of the San Rafael where Arline Schade and Virginia Shaw of Wellington instructed on the cutting, pressing and speed method of putting the antique pattern together by sewing machine. Two ways of finishing off edges around projects made with cathedral windows quilts, wall hangings, table runners, place mats and more, was also taught. Ladies learning this new skill were: Jennifer Hymas, Stormy Anderson, Jean Morlan, Lynda Nelson, Valerie Hall, Ellen Wingate, Carol Scott, Sylvia Nelson and Ina Lee Magnuson. Christine Jensen, USU Extension agent for Emery County, will be holding another class on Nov. 17, where participants can learn 'how to make various Christmas and gift projects.
