Nadine said that the family keeps her busy, but she does take a bit of time for some oil painting, makes porcelain dolls and likes to sew, she is also an organizer, especially in the home, so that everything is in good order, a busy active mother and homemaker, kj Breaking The Habit continued from front page Situational Looming: When you are feeling good but go to the doctor for a physical, you cant I I I seem to remember very many health problems. But when you have to go with even a cold, you remember similar problems easily. This is because of what psychologists call situational learning. They have found that the more closely a situation is repeated, the more you remember and act as you did in that situation before. This happens when watching TV. You sit down to read the paper but plan to move on immediately to an important project. Somehow the television set gets turned on and you just sit there until the evening has gone. The situation was more commanding than your project. So you must discover the situations that summon you to , watch. If you have a chair that you usually watch television from, you are going to have to move the chair, move the TV or sit elsewhere. Otherwise, the situation will simply repeat itself. If you are used to viewing while eating at TV trays, you should switch to eating in the dining room. Emotional Looming: The most powerful way to learn something and have the habit stick with you seemingly forever is emotional learning. Anything you learn by emotion will influence your behavior no matter what your rational mind believes. Television grabs you by the right side, the emotional side, of the brain. That is why when you ask people how much television they view, they may get defensive, huffy or mad. They are very emotional about the topic and will even lie to themselves to defend the habit. Be aware of this factor. You may find yourself finding excuses to watch a show just this once, because it really is very important, etc. Emotionally, you will not want to quit viewing, so it is very important in your preparation to things that give you an emotional lift, a sense of achievement. over-schedu- le SOMETHING In her book, Breaking the TV Habit, Joan Anderson Wilkin outlines a four-wee- k program to reduce hours with the set. With this program, you start the reduction slowly, then quit completely, then go back to a more manageable schedule. But with any TV. viewing (short of no TV at all), you must be very careful not to backslide. Maybe once a year you should undergo the cold turkey method. If you find you cant take one week of no TV, its time to seriously your priorities. Youll gain more control of your time, and your life, if you think a little before you click on the set. n ji nwm VERTISED SPE ESTRICTION 1 |
