Show SEPTEMBER 7, 1983 Darts Stymie Scots By KEITH DUNCAN SOME OF the fill-in- s included several juniors w ho according to the head coach, performed superbly in their first varsity starts. A couple of those juniors included running-bac- k Mike Robinson who gained 99 yards for the night on offense and ended up scoring two of Davis touchdowns, one from four yards out and another from 8. Robinson also played the linebacker position on defense. Journal Sports KAY S VILLE If we had of played a team that could have sustained any kind of offense, we would have lost, stated Ward Sawley after his Davis Darts shut down Ben Lomond 19-- 0 last Friday night in the first of four home games for Davis. LUCKY FOR us Ben Lomond didnt make things happen, continued Sawley. 1 thought our offensive showing was very lackluster, especially with them (Scots) beating us across the line. Well lose for sure if we dont win the battle of the line, he stated. THOSE COMMENTS by Davis fifth-yehead man were quite sincere and were equally shared by many of the players and the rest of the coaching staff. Said lineman, Greg McNabb, 1 felt like that effort was ten notches below were we should have been. A quick glance at the stats might raise the question, Why such a beef over the offense? Davis totaled 262 yards rushing on 49 carries which averages out at 5.3 yards per carry. Thirteen first downs were collected in the process. . ANOTHER junior who stood out was Rody Meacham who as a lineman, netted four unassisted tackled and four assisted. Andy Neff was still another as he started and played the entire game as a lineman. Still others were Steve Pearson and Scott Ward. Sawdey was pleased about the defense demonstrated, which continually shut down Ben Lomond tries. We got a couple of TDs and - then it was the defense that kept us in it, said Sawley. THE ANSWER is that nearly all night the Darts were inconsistent. The execution was off, three fumbles occurred and they lost all three and several passes were dropped that should have been caught. Combine that with some missed blocks and youve got a concerned Coach Sawley who knows league play n is just one more game away. Davis played without the services of both Jeff Sampson and Jeff Hammer, who sat this game out with injuries. As Sawley said, That was one really positive thing, that we had some people to fill in. Taking those two out is like taking four people out since they start two ways. YOU HAVE to give both McNabb and Chris Stevenson credit for outstanding games on defense. Stevenson was hungry that night as he collected nine unassisted tackles and four assisted plus an interception. It was clearly one of Stevensons better games ever as a Davis Dart. McNabb had a couple of passes that he batted down and he nearly picked off another besides that. He also recovered a fumble and contributed to five unassisted tackles and two assisted. In total, Ben Lomond gained only six yards rushing the entire evening. BESIDES Robinsons two TDs, the other lone score came from QB Steve Sargent on a four yard run. Sargent went two for 10 in the passing department, but had several passes dropped that should have been caught. But what couldnt be done through the air, was done on the ground where Robinsons 99 yards were combined with Mark Millers 54, Ryan Smiths 75 and David Kinards 28. -- Out-and-o- -- ss THE 1983 game is no different. Just because Clearfield enters the game winless and Davis goes in undefeated, these two county squads might go down to the final few minutes to decide the outcome. The two meet this Friday at 7:30 in Kaysville. Says Ward Sawley of Davis High, Itll be one of the toughest games well play all year. CLEARFIELD year in and year out, is always one of the toughest teams on our scherecord is never a factor dule. Their win-los- s here. The Falcons could just as easily been 0 2-- but a couple of funny happenings didnt do them justice. SAWLEY ALSO reported tha the Falcons would be the biggest team theyve faced so far. So you can expect a good physical contest, said Sawley. The rivalry between the two schools has existed since the early 60s and to the best knowledge of most people familiar with this rivalry, there have been very few if any at all, blow out games. The contests have always been close. ITS THE pride factor, said Sawley who has played against Clearfield, coached with Clearfield and coached against Clearfield. to buy When you go'over to shoelaces youre bound to bump into a Clear- field player. Theres a lot of pride between the kids to come out ahead in this game, said Sawley. - :V W. ut Comfort Junior Varsity Begin Grid Iron Action Falcons Face Darts KAYSVILLE - Regardless what their win-lomark says, when Clearfield and Davis lock horns on the gridiron, you can assume that this is going to be one dandy of a football contest. I had never coached before and havent even played since I was a girl (which was a long time ago). WHEN MR. Hansen from the Kaysville recreation called and asked if my husband and I would like to coach a team it seemed like a large expenditure of time that I wasnt sure I wanted to spend. While I was trying to think of a good excuse to gracefully decline the offer, my husband was called to be the Bishop of the Kaysville 18th Ward and I felt this certainly eliminated him. I had two girls playing on this team and I decided that it certainly was my turn to help and so launched my coaching career. The girls were most patient with me and tried to teach me what to do. I bought myself a baseball shirt and dusted off my Keds, but I soon found out there was more to coaching than wearing the team colors. I HAD to learn the rules of softball, and as the girls began to win game after game I found some great athletes on this Coach Lois Smuin, back left, lists many reasons why shes immersed herself in coaching such teams as this cham-- 1 pionship Kaysville girls softball team. One of the biggest challenges was being able to use all the girls in every game because there were so many good players. As the season progressed we won all of our league games plus the Layton Invitational and went on to become the champions of the Layton League. The most valuable player aVvard was won by Kris Kunnen on our team. ME TOOK the league with a record of not a single loss or forfeit. What a massive team. I not only had a great team but I had great support from parents who were there game after game. Fathers like Pete Fondario who was our third base coach and greatest fan. He brought the girls gum, drinks and pizza but most of all great support. My husband even with his new job only missed one game and was our first base coach and equipment hauler. As the season came to a close and I finally got the dust from my Levis, it was with some sadness that I returned the equipment to Mr. Hansen. These were great girls, not only good ball players but good sports as well. I do hope they had as 1 Hid. mnrh ftin LEISURE LIFE INTERIOR LATEX FLAT WALL PAINT A premium decorative latex wall paint for all interior wall surfaces. Dries quickly to a rich velvet appearance.
