Show V i WEEKLY 1 NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JULY 15, 1982 REFLEX-DA-VIS Clearfield Recreation Football Fervor Lures Recreation football Athletes Into Weightrooms Keith Duncan Journal Sports Though Clearfields Brent Hancock, Laytons Gary Hansen and Davis Ward Sawley all have different ways of handling their respective prep football programs, some of their ideas have the same color. ITS SUMMERTIME and one idea these three veteran mentors agree on is that summer is for kids. And though summer conditioning is a vital part of their programs, the three remain flexible to all that a summer can bring. Beginning last Monday kids and coaches of Clearfield, Layton and Davis began meeting on a day to day basis. Each coach has his own way of handling things, but narrowing down the purpose of their visits would have to be defined generally as the annual summer conditioning program. IVE ALWAYS believed that summer is for the kids. However, it can still be a time for those who are serious about getting ready for the season, to build strength and skill, said Hancock, the Falcon head coach. At Davis, several 82 hopefuls have been pumping iron all summer. At least one coach is always there to supervise and Jim Dickson happens to have the kids this week. Its still low key, especially this early. The weightlifting program is for everyone but not everyone comes. Weve got kids who play baseball; some in school leadership and still others who have other interests to them. As we get closer to the season the kids realize the importance of being here .but for now its their time, said Dickson. THE LANCERS began meeting last Monday for the first time officially. Hansen has always been a firm believer in solid physical preparation before a season gets underway and beginning Monday hell have the kids hard at the weights again. Though none of the schools in the state can officially put on pads until two weeks before the first game, some coaches also mix a few fundamentals and skill routines in with the weightlifting. THE WEBER State passing league, a event for preps only, is one event that helps players in the skilled positions. Coach Hancock of Clearfield allows his players to be involved. Last Tuesday night they went against THE FALCONS, ready to forget the happenings of 1981, appear eager and hungry for a new season to get underway. Seniors like J.C. VonCollin, Robbie Sherwood, Norm Taylor, Dirk Barlow, Roger Hill, Dean Foulger, Todd Blair and others couldn't be more anxious. The team concept is being sold and oversold, said Hancock, its a great bunch of kids. July The Clearfield Recreation Department announces that all boys interested in playing recreation football can register at the Clearfield Swim Pool located at 934 S. 1000 East from July 15 to Aug. 5 during the hours of 8 a m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. A birth certificate or blessing certificate must accompany all registrations for proof of age The fee will be $20 which includes 1, 3, DAVIS STILL remembers their victory over Bountiful which gave them a piece of the region championship. The question is whether they can defend that region championship and once again make it to the state playoffs? Only one thing is for sure, only time will tell. The Darts have been producing at least eight to ten seniors at the summer sessions with more still to come. Some of the seniors like Rick Secrist The Darts have been producing at least eight to ten seniors at the summer sessions with more still to come. Some of the seniors, like Rick Secrist, would like nothing more than make it two in a row. Rick, like about a dozen other Darts, attend the Weber State Football Camp earlier. THIS YEARS senior class has gradually improved but will have their greatest challenge when they kick off with Ben Lomond in late August. Another team that wants to forget the happenings of 1981 are the Layton Lancers who won only one game, a slim victory over their neighbors from ITS HARD to say just how well do, said senior this falls but feel there is something about team that we didnt quite have last Kenny Heath, I season. The swimmers work out two hours each weekday. During the summer months they swim from 9 a.m. When school is in session the team practices on week nights from 3:30-- 5 p.m. The club has no swimming facility of their own so they have to rent the Roy Complex pool. This is somewhat expensive. The team is limited in the amount of time they can use the pool. Practice schedules are worked around the public use of the pool time. 7-- COACH Whipple says his team is the best quality club in the state even though they are fewer in number than most teams and they dont spend as much time working out as other swim teams. Members of the USAA swim program compete in individual events and relay team events. All swimmers must know the butterfly, back, breast strokes. Coach I Whipple started swimming when he was eight years old. He competed in swimming meets throughout his high school years. Competition was great but coaching offered him even more appealing chal- lenges. THERE WERE only six children involved in the program when it started. Eventually 70 amateur swimmers joined the club. This number has decreased somewhat this year because several of the swimmers were members of military families that have transferred from this area. Several members of the Roy Swim Team have received college scholarships. COACH WHIPPLE is always looking for good, dedicated young swimmers. This program offers many bod- ybuilding and characterbuilding incentives.
