Show i I WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- ViS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, APRIL 1, 1982 Clearfield Captures Keith Duncan Journal Reflex Sports CLEARFIELD i t - John Flint and his prep tracksters are back at it again. Last Thursday they showed up on their own track for the first time this season and looked brilliant for such an early season outmg. THE FALCONS totalled 22 points to outdistance Davis who had 53. Evanston, Wyo. was also at the meet but could only muster three points. They may not have a bunch of superstars, but they sure have the depth, said Frank Thompson, the Davis High mentor, as he described the Clearfield team. THE FALCONS may be just as Thompson said they were. Compared to teams who have represented the green and white for the past few years, this years group doesn't have the headline makers. But they are loaded with depth and plenty of second, third and fourth place finishers add up to points too. "That's been my philosophy in track since the day 1 arrived here," said Flint. "If we dont have the first place guys, then we'll come back with depth to win. BUT LAST Thursday, the Falcons also had their share of first place winners. Jon Tisler was a winner as he took top honors in the high jump and long jump. J.C. was a first place winner in both the discus and the shot put. The outstanding performances of the day came from VonCollin in the discus where he threw 149.1, that was just inches off the mark that won the state title last year. J.C. will be out to break the school record in the discus this season which is held by Brad Wilkes at a 156 feet. two-eve- Von-Colh- n 4-- ANOTHER impressive performance was made by Darren Lewis who ran a 4.37.84 in the 1600 meters. The Clearfield junior was an easy winner in the race and gave senior Bill Wilcox all he could handle. "Lewis run was very impressive this early in the season. We start getting a time like his a little later so it was good to see him do that well. BUT STATEWIDE, Lewis has a long way to go. 1 know of three runners in Utah that are running the mile in less than 4:20. This will be an unbelieve-abl- e year in track and field for Utah. I can't remember when we've had so many outstanding athletes," said Flint. Still another impressive show ing was that of T racy Pitkin in thev300 Intermediate Hurdles with a time of 40.34. DAMS SPENCER DeGraw was one of the three from Davis who took first place, but DeGraw ended up taking two first in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. DeGraw, despite winning both, admits that he is out of shape. His win in the 100 meters was a photofinish ending with Clearfield's Brian Wright. Wright had led most of the w ay in the short dash but DeGraw came on later to nip him. In the 200 meter it was Wright who finished second again. Tri-Me- et meters. He had just arrived at the meet to run the 800. He had just won a prep tennis match a little earlier. Davis' Snowball was the first place winner in the pole vault. Mike Fahnart placed first for Clearfield in the high hurdles with Keith Femn of Davis taking second. JIMMY PHILLIPS, who enjoyed a very impressive indoor season, was just a step behind DeGraw and Wright in the dashes. He was. however, on the first place 400 meter relay which Clearfield took in easy fashion. The meter relay team consists of Wright. Phillips, Dean Fulger and J ared Martin . Bubba Conley looked quite impressive winning the 400 meter race. Martin, of Clearfield. took second in that race. Mike Rhodes of Clearfield w as second in the 800 meter run while Lewis took third place. DOIG PASKET of Clearfield captured first place honors in the javelin event with Shawn Williams of Clearfield taking second. Davis' Kettenr-incould do no better than third place. g The Falcons were also first place winners in both the medley and mile relays. THE LAST Clearfield first place victory came from Richard Bouchard in the 3200 meters. Bouchard's victory was particulary enjoyable to him in that he missed the region cross country finals last fall due to a serious leg injury He appears to be on the road to success. Again it was Wilcox taking second in this race. . ONE OTHER Dart first place came from the talented Dale Espinoza in the 800 in the 3200 meter race Inst week in Richard Bouchai J captured fust place with Daws md kanston the tLeft) Clearfield's 400 meter combination of Jimmy Phillips. Kail Wilson. Brian Wright and Dean Foulger will win their share of iclay races this season. The defeated both Evanston. Wyo. and Da i is High last week. Keith Duncan Journal Reflex Sports - One of the LAYTON bright spots in Lancer track and field is the brother combination of Mike and Miram Cooper. During their first year in a Layton uniform they were making headlines in a roundabout way. Cooper Brothers Give MIKE MAY turn out to be a Russ Jones best among Layton's sprinters while Miram has been a first class 800 meter man. Besides these two athletes, Jones will also build his team around hurdlers Steve Barker, Scott Crawford and Jim Norton. Tom Kidd appears to have the inside edge at the 400 meter spot w ith the Cooper brothers. Mike Cabrey, Floyd Kearl and Dave Kirkham battling him along the way. MIRAM MAY give Layton their spot in the 800 meter. He has already gathered in some first places this season. The junior is just a second off the school record and has been clocked at 51.5 in the mile relay race. Tom Allen also appears to be Layton's next best at the 800. Layton Track Something To Smile About a family affair. Miram runs the 800 meter, while Mike is It's the best sprinter. Track Meet Is On The Mark WOODS CROSS er permitting the Clearfield boys and the Davis girls w ill be out to defend their Davis County titles this Friday and Saturday as Woods Cross will host the second annual Davis County Invitational meet. LAST YEAR the Falcon males and the Dart females won their respective titles on the Clearfield track. At least one coach expects those two clubs to repeat. Clearfield has such great depth. noted Lynn DuBois the track coach of Viewmont. "and the lady Darts are loaded." He should know about the lady Davis squad since he has a ninth grade daughter on the team. His own Viking males were slated to give the Falcons a but good run for the team title certain things may prevent that from happening. "We learned that on Saturday our Jazz band has a concert in Provo and Alan Parker is one of their best players. It looks right now that hell miss Saturday entirely. He'll probably run the two mile on Friday but that will be it. Also, our top quarter-mile- r will be with the Jazz band, he lamented. ITS TOO bad that the track fans won't see Parker who was a heavy favorite in the 800 meters and the 1600 meters. Friday will see the finals of the field events and the trials for the running events. Finals for the runners will be Saturday. THE SEASON has barely started, and based upon last years performance and those returning, here is a capsule look at some of the races. The sprints should be great to watch with several schools boasting top athletes. Davis has Spence DeGraw, Bountiful will go with Mike Gee who beat DeGraw in a dual meet last week; Clearfield will go with Brian Wright and Viewmont sophomore Jon Warner could surprise them all. THE QUARTER mile shapes up to be a battle between Bubba Conley of Clearfield and Lex Brown of Bountiful. That is if Lex runs, it depends on his baseball schedule. The 800 meter race could have been a great one with Parker going against Layton star Marion Collins. Marion is a move in for the Lancers and he could have pushed Parker hard . but as of now it looks like Collins will win. THE DISTANCE races could prove interesting with Clearfield looking to Darren Lewis and Bill Wilcox. Viewmont will send Brian Fuller and Parker against them in the two mile. Woods Cross also has several top distance runners that could figure in this race. The javelin event could go to Anthony Skedros of Viewmont, the Vikes are strong in this area, while J.C. VonCollin of Clearfield is favored in the shot, although, Robert Steed of Davis will battle him for top honors. will also be tough to beat in the discus. Last week his winning throw was only two inches short of the winning effort in the state last season. Mike Evans of Davis will push him. Rich Weight, the 3A state champion, will be favored in the high jump with John Tisler of Clearfield right with him. Tisler will also figure in the long jump where Woods Cross will sent Barton Bishop and VONCOLLIN THE LONG jump event will include Tom Kidd, Norton. Mike Plaza and Mike Smithz. The high jump loses the talented Lane Sackett to graduation. but they have Jerry Cooper, Darrell Lacey and Hollis Hatch. The pole vault will be manned by Dan Hunt who has never performed in that event until this year. LAYTON WILL send Mike Martin. A1 Clark and Brett Campbell to compete in the discus while the shot put will have Shawn Stevens. Matt Ostead. Martin. Tracy Hunter and Brett Hansen. "At the time his eyes lit up and he was all for it. 1 talked to Coach (Gary) Hansen and we got him a uniform and even got him in on a kickoff return in the last game against Clearfield That got him excited and a little fired up about next year in The javelin will be thrown by Kearl. who Jones feels can compete competiviely in the region. Other throws will be made by John Conley and Blaine Tracey. W E ARE not going to be a region contender but there are football. some kids on this team who will improve their time and give the rest of the talented kids in this region a run for their money." said Jones. The story of Miram Cooper, who has been an inspiration to his team in the 800 and the mile relay, began last fall in football. "He wasn't dressing very much at first." recalled Jones who coached him on defense. "As time went on. however, he started to do a fair job with the JV. JUST OUT of curiosity. asked him one day if he ran track. He told me that he had messed around with it once before. but hadn't done much with it. I asked him if I could get him dressed for a varsity game and possibly got him in. would he come out for track. 1 Sports Magazine Awards Kaysvilles Scott Strong Clearfield and Davis to defend titles Weath- Trevor Figgins, ajunior. will give Layton strength in the 1600 meter, but he is still recovering from surgery performed on his leg dunng the winter. He will be Layton's top distance man. Other long distance runners include Mike West. Tracy Meastas. Tim Bowers and Mark Baloni. The top two mile runners will be Tal Pierce, Charles Thayer and Eric Cluzek. Bountiful will send Lex Brown. RICK SNOWBALL of Davis is considered tops in the pole vault but there are plenty of others right behind him. The top three placers will rewhile the top six ceive will all receive medals. "Sports Afield" magazine takes great pleasure in announcing the awarding of its "Best m Species" angling citation to Scott Strong, local fisherman who resides in Kaysville. Miram was no where to be found. I stopped him one day in the hall and reminded him of our deal. He came out shortly after that and began running the 800. His indoor time was impressive and he was a boost to the other kids. I think the other kids saw how excited I was about him and they started to root for him. "Every meet he ran. his time got better. Then when the outdoor started he gave the tough kids a run for their life. He wins the 800 meters then turns around and helps us win the mile relay. Against Davis he took the baton from his brother and ran a 51.5 in the quarter. His eyes were beaming when he won that relay. He is going to get better too." said Jones. t RUSS JONES HEAD COACH Clearfield High School Track Schedule 1982 -- April Z, 3, Fri., Sat., Davis District Champions - 10:00 April 7, Wed.
