Identify Winners THAT IS the story of Clearfields Jeff Schofield who the other day said he measures in at 66 and almost For Coach Craig Hansen, having a guy like Schofield around in a year when basketball players in Region One resembles an oak tree forest, it must be a little relieving. But the success of Schofield wasnt on the schedule to become what it is now, in fact it isnt even close. 67. JEFF WAS perhaps 5 10 in the ninth grade and believe it or not, didnt even make the junior high team. But despite that he still had every desire to play the game and settled that winter into playing church basketball for his father, Nolan, who was the coach. Looking back on everything, I credit my dad and my uncle for helping to motivate me and giving me a chance to play. They saw things that I wasnt capable of seeing and because of it, Im starting for Clearfield today, said Jeff. IN THE beginning, The Beehive State Racing Association held their weekly races on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Lagoon Racing track. ' Jeff pie-seas- the success Clearfield enjoyed. During the win over Ben Lomond he tossed in a 17 re- Wildcats Nip Darts DURING THE week Coach Wayne Baker of Woods Cross indicated he would play Davis as a five man team and not do anything fancy to try to stop Brian Taylor of the Darts. Well Mr. Taylor got his points, 32 on the night, but the Cats were too strong up front and handed the Darts a 8 setback. Kris Cottrell was the only other Dart to get in the double figure scoring while the 65-5- Cats showed their balance with four men in double figures and one just under it. THE HEIGHT of the Wildcats was just too much for the much smaller Davis side in this battle and time after time the matches in his initial year of action, he saved a place m his heart for the sport of wrestling. Since that time the Clearfield High senior has made his progress m the winter sport. His achievements havent I could have cared less whether I won or lost as a sophomore. Then as a junior I cared a little more but gave up in state. This time I'm going all the way to help make up for what I didn't accomplish in football, said Wilson. At the first of the football season I figured we'd have a pretty good team. We had the speed, the weight and all the desire in the world. BUT WE started underestimating teams which got us in trouble. It cost us a good year because once we started getting down on ourselves, it was hard getting back up, said Wilson. Karl has put last fall's football season behind him and material Jeff Schofield wasnt considered starting-fivwhen the season first began, but thats changed now. Jeff, is a key member of the Falcon basketball team. at 6-- 7, The up and coming prepster has a lot of goals in mind, as far as basketball is concerned, but his number one ambition is to help his Falcon teammates knock off powerhouses like Bonneville and Roy for another region championship. along the way he said that ing Bonneville would be the next best thing. He has a second cousin, Chene Gardner, that plays for the Lakers. beat- them. At 175 lbs., Jeff doesnt have what it takes to shove people around, but he isnt the kind that allows himself to get moved about. I dont like to get pushed around and if someone starts shoving, then they get a little back, he said. JEFFS FATHER Nolan played some basketball at Weber State while his mothers side of the family is full of Gardners in the area who have meant as much to basketball as anyone in northern Utah. If Jeff continues to progress there is little doubt that college basketball will be the next boat to step to. Be aware that he has certainly given that some thought. A WE ARE going to count on people like Jeff to come through, said Hansen, I think that Jeff has woke up to the fact he has arrived and now its time for him to play consistent and do his job. Hansen calls the Schofield family a super group of people who are often times the soft spoken and quiet people that stay loyal to you through the good and the bad. He was quick to add that behind Jeff comes his little brother Hal, who plays for the sophomore team. PERHAPS LAST summer is where Jeff made the final and important committment that he wanted to become a starting basketball player for Clear- field. He had started only one game as a junior varsity player and the only reason that took place was because the regular player had injured himself. He had every intention on coming into the program this winter ready to battle the best of 1 person to ever wrestle When I come to the wrestling room for practice I like to make the coach mad. Once he is mad he starts working us harder and by the time a workout is over we know we've had a good one, said Wilson. Unlike football, where Karl had to depend on teammates to come through with him, wrestling is a sport where you take all the credit if you win and all the blame if you lose. That's . the way I like it, said Wilson. Earl Jonas and Budwieser 23.76 over Williams and Rawlins 23.74; Grant Workman 23.33 over Marler Tire 23.63; Jay Tracy 24.27 over Vickery and Weese 24.40. DURING KARLS career at Clearfield he ran the ball from the tailback slot and played plenty of defense at a line backer slot.
