Besides playing the traditional military marches, their repertoire includes jazz, classical. uniformed excellence adds much to each event in which WHILE THE echoes of their music were still floating over Germany, France and Belgium, the band took up residence at Fort Huachuca in 19M And the former cavalry post is still home to the illustrious group As the only Army band in Arizona, the 36th is in demand for parades, concerts, tours, Widening Canyon Road THERE WILL be road Commencing July 6, the Federal Aviation Administration will be widening and imCaproving the Farmington nyon Road from the "Y" (approx. 5 miles up Farming-toCanyon) to the FAA Equipment Garage fairs and other community events They perform, not n only throughout Arizona, but clo- sures with limited access. This inconvenience will last days Public compliance will be greatly appreciated 30-4- 5 A tentative official that the new fire district would be established to serve the three incorporated cities as well as the unincorpo- agreement cities and Commissioner Harry Gerlach was reached earlier, but Centerville - in its last regular city council meeting approved the agreement only if the suggested amendments were approved THESE SIX recommended changes are rated area of south Davis -- County BOL'NURL, Farmington and North Salt Lake have their own fire departments and are not included in the fire district, it was explained Contact $ CRISIS S NEED full and pad time help in my small expanding business Reply Utah to box 267CD Bountiful 64C10 R22 23 RAISE YOUR FAMILY INCOME SELL AVON earn good money Call 376 3352 394 5627 355 5147 R23 24 an s yame J By DAVE WIGHAM Had SALT LAKE CITY a couple of firsts happen last Saturday A friend called up and informed me he had a ticket for me to attend the full contact karate fight that night at the fairgrounds HAYING NEVER seen either the coliseum or a karate fight I quickly took him up on the offer and ventured in The fairgrounds isn t exactly the ideal place to take that special female and ask her the big question but it struck me as the ideal place to hold a fight Inside looked the same as I always pictured the 1910's and I was informed that that was about right since it was in its original state THE RING itself was more like a trampoline with all the bounce it gave, but then may be it was set up that way to enable these karate guys a good spring for all those kicks they get off Hopefully when the boxing takes place there is a little less spring since one of those big guys could bounce right back up after getting drilled Don't get this report wrong, the facilities were very clean and well kept but it was like going into a time warp machine and stepping back a couple of decades THEN I met the main man of the night, at least he was billed as that James Hydnck is right out of the Bruce Lee mold, which is fine with him since he idolizes the man He runs a huge Rung Fu studio in Salt Lake City and is the guy you've see on television moving those objects with nothing but positive thinking Most of the experts, those wearing the karate outfits were all concerned for James since the guy he was taking on was about 20 pounds heavier than he was Y ou see all these commercials about the little guy beating up the big guy w ith karate but that doesn't hold true when both the guys know karate Truth was, most folks gave James a pat on the back for even getting into the ring with this animal from Dallas who hadn t lost a fight BEFORE TIB main event though the fans were treated to a few little sidelights First of all James got into the ring and showed some of his stuff, right out of one of those karate movies He had a helper, who should also get some award for courage, hold up pads while James kicked mm all over the ring He then demonstrated how high he could kick and believe me Kareem Abdul Jabbar isn t safe Then he tried to move an object off the table but was un- able to do so indicating the lights were too hot and bothered him In reality the lights should be dark, that's the way it is in the Orient," he noted THEN THREE amateur fights pitting guys from Salt Lake City against three from Tulsa got the fans going The local lads won all three and the crowd was really jumping Aggressiveness seemed to be the winning ingredient m these battles Whoever went after the other guy got the upper hand These were no full con- tact bouts but you still wouldn t catch this guy going for it Then there was a couple of full contact fights, getting the crowd readv for the main event The fans didn't want to see style and grace they I hen came the featured event. Dale Cook of Tulsa and Scott Ochoa of Salt Lake City Cook is the number one welterweight in the country but the local dude gave him all he wanted Truth of the matter is many fans booed the close decision given to Cook As for me I don't know how they judge a karate event so I came away thinking the Salt Lake guy was just as good as the one from Tulsa THE FIGHT was supposed to go five rounds but just prior to the bout the ring announcer informed everyone that Cook had a bad back and his trainer didn't want him to fight at all but the fighter agreed to three rounds Ochoa got stronger in the match and common opinion was he would have won in wanted some knock downs and heads split They soon got their wish as both fights ended with knockouts Sitting at ringside I could see and feel the impact of some of these punches and kicks The kicks are important since each fighter must get in at least eight kicks per three minute round or he's penalized two points for every one under eight THE ONLY thing missing was a knockout with the foot All the fighters seemed aware of the kicks and were particularly defensive about it Then came the Hydrick bout, which was only put together a short time ago since no one really wanted to fight this Morley guy from Texas Soon the fans saw why Morley was all over Hydrick from the start James tried gamely to outwit and out quick his opponent but Morley stocked him like a caged animal and moved in for the kill Twice in the first round Morley cornered him against the ropes and used his power to knock Hvdnck dow twice five The last two events were what I expected, grace and quickness along with power These guys were showing everything they had in their arsenal Spinning high kicks, quick front kicks, full twisting punches, straight boxing at times, jumping kicks, counter punching and out and out THEN IN the second round James had trouble moving and Morley quickly moved in for the kill W'hich might have happened, literately, had not the seconds from Hydncks corner thrown in the towel In the dressing room Hyd-ricwas treated for a possible broken foot I broke it before and thought it was healed but I guess not In the first round I kicked him and he blocked it and the foot just gave. I kept on fighting but couldnt move Hydrick said Even with a healthy foot it would have been tough for James to have beaten this guy from Texas who remained unbeaten as a professional k meanness They weren t pulling anything as they went toe to toe at times IT VY ASVT as barbaric as it might sound since they were all required to w ear padding on their feet for protection and ten ounce boxing gloves. Well that was the card The amateurs impressed me with their enthusiasm and a desire to give the fans a show while the professionals were a little more concerned with their health WALKING TO my car after the bouts 1 felt ready to take on the first brick I That the district board of directors remain at four mem1 be- tween mayors of the three BUYS DEADLINES REFLEX, JOURNAL, France THE FORTY men and TNT FURNITURE O KEEFE Merritt 4 burner gas stove with center grill and broiler $95 00 Call 376 8077 R23 By GARY R. THAT A clause regarding bonding either be eliminated or changed to include a unanimous'' instead of a "majority vote of the board. 3. That a pay off clause, inferred but not spelled out, be included as a part of the agreement g 4. THAT A paragraph be added to explain the authority of the board to purchase new equipment 5 That a detailed schedule of equipment and real estate being purchased by the cities be spelled out in detail in the agreement 6. THAT THERE be an inclusion in the ordinance that would allow cities to be rebated for their share of any and all new equipment and supplies should a city withdraw from the district at a later date It was also suggested that a "periodic appraisal be made of this equipment In the meantime, the current interlocal agreement requires the three cities to purchase from Davis County the present fire station, property, equipment and supplies at a prorated cost of $192,600 The property will be purchased over a period ALSO, THE three cities - as well as unincorporated Davis C 'unty (Val Verda) - will be assessed for operation and maintenance of the fire district based on property valuation This amount, which will vary with the size of each cit y , is based on 3 17 mills of assessed valuation, on an average of $7.39 per capita. THE FIRE district has a tentative operation and maintenance budget of $206,000 for its first year of operation which began July This budget, expected to be ratified by the board, is slightly higher than the 1980-8budget but consid erably less than the budget requested for 1981-8Also, officials agreed to hire Woods Cross City Recorder Alan Low to handle bookkeep ing and accounting for the new fire district We submitted a proposal of $2,400 per year, in eluding time needed on the computer ALTHOLGH THE new dis trict was to begin operation under the new orgamzaiton on July I, it was decided that Davis County will continue to operate the station during July 6 to allow for any revisions to be made and for final adoption ct the agreement 1 1 2 |
