Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, MAY 20. 1981 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 20, 1981 Soccer Clinic Slated In June Bountiful Cit Recreation is offering their fourth annual soccer clinic this summer. Beginning players will go from June 8 through the 12th with advanced players going the following week on June Over 300 players have gone through the clinic in previous ears and a large number is expected again this summer. ALL FUNDAMENTALS of the game will be taught, also, the rules of the game and A Little Of This will he handled. Heading the staff will be Dave Wigham former coach at Weber State and Yiewmonl High. Also high school players from throughout the area will assist depending on the number in each session. The clinic lasts for the entire week with each session taking I ': hours. The clinic itself u ill be held at Millereek Jr High with registration taking place right now at the recreation center. And Some Of That strategy By DAVE WIGHAM Big Game Hunts Each year Division of Wildpersonnel receive complaints from the public in the field on the manner in w hich big game hunts are conducted or on big game regulations. These complaints are important and should be heard, but there is a time and a place to make these com- plaints and feelings known. AN ANNUAL public meeting is held in the northern region of the state which serves as the public means of input into big game recommendations. This year the meeting will be held on May 28 at 7 p.m. at the Utah Power and Light auditorium, 457 26th Street in Ogden. This meeting is open to anyone in Davis County or counties north to the Idaho border w ho w ish to state their feelings about big game hunts or regulations. IN THE past these meetings have been very valuable to serve as an additional means of surveying public opinion concerning hunts and thereby assist conservation officers in making season and permit re commendations as well as regulations concerning big game animals in the area. These meetings are held yearly about this same time. After considering input from the public, and information about herd conditions and range conditions gathered by Wildlife Resources. Bureau of Land Management, and the Forest Service, the board of big game control will set big game seasons during an executive session on June 6. SINCE THE June 6 meeting will set regulations statewide, public meetings are scheduled in other areas of the state to give all interesied parties a chance to express their feelings. Public meetings are scheduled at St. George. June I; Junction. June 2; Moab. June 3; Vernal. June 4: and Salt Lake City. June 5. The Salt Lake meeting will be held in the South Salt Lake County Library located at 2480 S. State Street at 7 p.m. and is mainly for areas of Salt Lake and south. Davis County residents should attend the Ogden meeting as that meeting represents the Davis County area. 1 Fitness Tips The trial of low body fat (thin), high training mileage, and dietary restriction should serve as a warning to all runners. TWELVE CASES are now on record of men who have died of heart attacks because they were trying to burn the candle at three ends: by increasing their training mileage, decreasing their calorie intake and being thin in the first place. Since good weather and race competition bring out a strong desire to run more and. at the same time, keep the weight down, this should be a reminder that long distance runners should not run on empty." RESTRICTING calorie intake below 1500 calories per day while participating in high mileage may carry some risk. At least, now I'm justified in eating Ding Dongsl Nutritionists at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst Monitored the w eight gains of 92 female infants during the first six months of and concluded that introduction of solid food rather than the type of milk is the most important variable in infant weight gain. I GUESS the moral here is that you mothers should time the introduction of a jogging program with the introduction of solid food for vour babies. then-live- t. ANOTHER FACT is th.it soccer is growing in these parts and the little league programs must be doing something right because three of the four in 3 A are from Davis County. Bountiful and Davis meet for the title this week and Woods Cross was in the top four. Speaking of that soccer tournament something should be done about the format. just don't see the logic in Woods Cross having to play Bountiful tw ice during the double elimination affair until the finals. As it was the Cats lost to the Braves in the quarterfinals. then after knocking off Highland they had to play the Braves again in the semifinals. They never did see American Fork or Davis two clubs they could and should have played. AFTER considering a lot of offers from the junior college folks. Norm Parrish of Viewmont. has signed on with Ricks College to play basketball for the next two years. Norm did receive some attention from a schools in California but he decouple of four-yea- r cided to stay dose to home and play for the Vikings. Maybe the name had something to do with it. Fligh school pitchers dream about being awesome in the state tournament but junior Phillip Schmutz of Bountiful is living that dream right now Going into this week Phil has pitched 12 and a third innings and has struck out 21 hitters. He came in against American Fork the opening day and struck out the first batters he saw. semi-finalis- 1 . . He stars in rightfield for the baseball team but still finds time to run track. This past weekend he was second in the 400 meters and third in the 800. He's also a great long jumper. Speaking of the Bountiful baseball team many fans are still saying they are too young to be good this year. "At the first of the year maybe we were young" noted their coach Phil Olsen, but they've played 20 games together this year and they're not that young anymore. Only three seniors see much playing time for the Braves who could be the youngest team in the state tournament. THE DESERET News interviewed Adrian Dant-le- y about the playoffs and called him the Utah franchise. No wonder the club can't win more than 30 games a year if he's the franchise. In the piece A.D. said that the club needs a power forward or a big man. True they need this but they also need five guys who'll play together at both ends of the floor. The coaching fraternity lost a good man this past year when Wally Hawkins of Woods Cross stepped down from head football at the school to take an administrative job at another school. Seems Wally is going to be a vice principal, good luck to him.
