A person whose home always looks like something from the pages of Good Housekeeping. The kind of place that is so clean, it almost makes you feel like a dirt ball when youre in it. Then there are those whose idea of cleaning is not to kill spiders because they eat the other insects. The June Cleavers of the world get personal satisfaction and praise for their spotless homes. But people with messy houses might be able to cash in on their squalor. If you havent cleaned your living room sofa since My Mother The Car was canceled, you may find a small bonanza. Check under the cushions for loose change. Silver coins dated 1964 or earlier are worth many times their face value. Even Kennedy bring a premium. Also look in the hall closet. Every year, auto dealers give away sales literature on their new models. Most people who visit car showrooms pick up some. It usually ends up on the coffee table. And stays there until it, and other junk, pile up so high you cant see the TV. Then someone, in a sudden burst of primitive neatness, scoops up an armful of it and carefully tosses it all into the nearest closet. Yet auto literature is sought after by collectors. A copy of the 1978 Corvette brochure currently brings from $2 to 85. And certain older literature is worth up to J30 or more. If the only time your refrigerator gets defrosted is during power blackouts, it could be a source of treasure. The recent rise in silver prices has made your silverware much more valuable then when it was proba1965-197- 0 half-dolla- bly originally purchased. e (For example, a Stieff Rose place setting that cost 89 in 1940 is now worth up to 8800.) So check the back shelves of your fridge for eating utensils stuck in bowls of petrified leftovers. Youll also want to look in the cupboard, or wherever you keep breakfast cereals. Look through the cardboard y jungle of dusty, boxes for some Post Grape Nuts. If you find one with a bed. Todays liberated woman doesnt want to, but neither does her mate. However, some enlighted people solved that problem long ago. Neither of them makes it. Such individuals probably didnt care what their childrens rooms looked like either. If you're one of them, go up to your sons old room. Many boys hid copies of Playboy under their beds. A conscientious housekeeper would have discovered and disposed of these magazines long ago. But if you are fortunate enough to have had a sloppy son who never cleaned his room, you may be able to make some cash. Certain early issues of Playboy are worth up to 8100 or more. Even fairly recent ones can bring a dollar or two. Another common sight in kids room are shoe boxes oozing with baseball cards. Most probably have little value. But some could be worth hundreds of dollars. A complete set of 1964 Topps baseball cards can bring up to 8400. And a single 1969 Topps Super Willy Mays card is valued at as much as 8250. As the special Spring 1981 issue of Baseball Hobby News stated, One of the reasons that so many older cards are of value is that so many mothers have a compulsion to keep a neat a messy house. For a list of baseball card dealers, send a stamped envelope and 81 to: Charles Webb Column, in care of this newspaper. Be sure to mention you want the Baseball Card Dealers list.
