Here he beats out Freddie Cook in the 400 meter relay held last week in a dual meet between the two schools. Wilson was the MVP in Saturday Nate Long Invitational. KING OF THE SPRINTS By KEITH DUNCAN After completing their finest week yet in track and field, Layton Highs Russ Jones must have a lot to feel good about. On the other hand, the impressive showing the Lancers put forth has the rest of the Region One foes totally confused about a prediction for a region champion. AT LAST Saturdays Nate Long Invitational in Salt Lake City, Layton put together some impressive combinations to grab fourth place among the state's finest track and field clubs. Neighboring Clearfield also sported their best effort in the annual event by taking third. Hillcrest. as expected, took first place honors with 85' points. South, despite the fact school, received they are a a special invite to the meet because the Nate Long event first orginated with the Cubs. South may be the finest squad in all of and had a chance to flex their muscles last Saturday by finishing second to with 72 points. MARK CARTER of Clearfield heaved the shot put 60 Hill-cre- feet to snare a first in that event while Robert Wilcox was the class of the 800 meter runners. Their two firsts helped to give the Falcons 63 'A points, just 3'A points better than Layton with 60. Wilson in the sprints and some confidence building experiences in region dual meets, the Lancers began to make their move. Last Wednesday in Clearfield, Jones and his Lancers took plenty more firsts than did the Falcons, but the solid depth of Clearfield paid dividends in the end, enough to just barely beat the Layton crew. new-face- d Skyline was fifth with 38'A while Roy was sixth with 37 points. JONES HAS headed the Lancer track and field team for just a short time compared to his other colleagues in the region. It was in the beginning of the season that he had serious doubts about the enthusiasm and interest Layton students had in the spring sport. Just a few miles north, in almost the same kind of conditions, John Flint was able to lure over a hundred kids into the spring sport. But at Layton, Jones was lucky to attract 40. So with a handful of athletes, with some pretty good ones mixed in there too, Jones hasn't despaired, somehow keeping the spirit alive among the few faithfuls he has. AND THINGS only got bet- ter last Saturday as Wilson took firsts in the 100 and 200 meters and ran a blazing leg on the winning 400 meter relay team. Wilson was tabbed as the meets outstanding performer for his efforts. Wilson hasnt been the only tower of strength for the Lancers. Combine his efforts with Jim Suitt in the shot put who probably won't Clearfields Carter, but is a steady notch behind him every week. Saturday he threw 557 to take second again. THEIR SHOWING in the Davis District meet was a lackluster effect in most respects. But with the return of Keith FACTORY SECONDS AND USED WINDSHIELDS SAVE $! Carter of Clearfield has beaten Ipaktchian before, but last week the Lancer discus standout edged out Carter twice. Layne Sackett may be the nicest surprise Jones has had. His performances in long jump as of late have given the team some points they didn't think they had. In the high jump Sackett jumped 4 to beat out Clearfield's Troy Nye in the Wednesday dual meet but faltered somewhat in the Nate Long event. Nye came back , Saturday to clear the bar at his best jump of the year.
