He has been registered a total of 27 years. He was born in American Fork and his father was a scoutmaster and a firm believer in the scouting program. He assisted Glen and his four brothers in becoming Eagle Scouts. From that time on his life has been devoted to scouting. MR. By DAVE WIGHAM - KAYSVILLE - Mike Gardner has set a record at Davis High. This season Mike is entering his 12th year as head basketball coach for the Darts. Tve been the basketball coach here longer than anyone else. He's also been as successful as any of those other guys as well. MIKE IS quick to respond on his longevity at the job. "the big reason is my assistant John Robison. I bet Fm the only coach in high school that has another head coach as my assistant. John keeps me going with his wit and enthusiasm. Some lucky high school will get him as a head man but right now I enjoy having him work with me." Indeed there is a bond between these two guys and it carries over onto the team. The team celebrates together when they win and they mourn together when they lose. There is no superstar on the squad, simply a bunch of good athletes that like to win and do everything in their power to CERTAIN THINGS to count on regarding basketball at Davis High. Dont even consider their preseason record when you talk about the Darts. "These games dont mean that much to us. Sure wed like to win but they are there to help get your club ready for the league action. Theres no doubt that we experiment in preseason, but then Major and Mrs. HallT. Rigby and their children hye beep in Naples on a three year assignment. They were frightened but came through unharmed. They sat in their car to keep from being injured. They felt fortunate to be safe after witnessing the tremendous damage and destruction all around theih. Etent Hatch (24) Lance Hill, Mike McGill and David Bock are the type of players Coach Gardner likes. thats what its there for, isnt it? asked Mike. Coach Gardner feels that same way about this club. We might not win early but well be in the thick of it come January." Truth is the Darts have won a couple of games this early, just ask Woods Cross. THERE IS a strance twist to the Darts this season. They have five lefthanders on the squad. "Coach Robison has the lefties and I take the right handed shooter" joked Coach Gardner. Leading scorer for the Darts thus far has been junior Brian Taylor. Brian is the younger brother of Craig who played for the Darts and then went on to USU. Brian is one of those lefthanded players who stands 63 and is still going. Because of his growth no one can really judge just how big hell get. He could very well be a great college player before hes through, noted Mike. THE TWO captains of the club are seniors Lance Hill and Brad Caldwell. Lance comes from the famous Hill family, yes his brother is Ryan who played for the Darts and is now on the Weber State football club. At 63 Lance is caught between playing both guard and forward, but he seems to enjoy both rolls. Lance is extremely aggressive on the court and loves the contact. Although only 6T Brad is one of the best rebounders on the club because of his bulk and positioning. Brad loves it under the boards, the rougher it gets the more he likes it, noted his coaches. THE BIG man in the middle is 66" senior David Bock. The key is to keep him in the game. He has foul troubles at times, added his coach. In deed the Darts need his size in the middle for rebounding as well as scoring. ., ,r,i Seniors Lynn Lky4 and Brent Hatch also see considerable action along with Mil$e McGill. Lloyd is a streak shooter who can score from anywhere on the floor when he gets going, just ask Judge. Lynn is also aggressive at both ends of the floor. Brent is extemely quick and jumps well which makes him a double threat to drive to the bucket. A great all round athlete Brent is one of those guys who loves to win and hates to lose. Mike is a fine ball handler and good outside shooter. JUNIOR MIKE Colemere, a fine ball handler, has also seen some action in the early going and could see more as the year rolls on. Davis is rich in tradition. They annually make the trip to the state tournament. Coach Gardner looks to Ogden as being the top club in the region again but don't be surprised if the Darts are right up there with the Tigers when the dust settles. One recalls a few years back when his offensive team truly ran and passed a good Notre Dame team out of the stadium, scoring over 40 points. SO IN bowl competition at least teams like Nebraska and Oklahoma, with their great offensive machines, are usually outstanding. The weather is good and all the players are usually healthy after a long rest and that helps offensive teams. and couldnt win the fight and couldnt bear to be seen on television battered about in the ' late rounds. Other fighters have quit, and it really isnt new. Muhammad Ali wanted to quit in his first fight for the title against Sonny Liston, but was talked out of it in his corner. Liston then quit. ' DURAN SAYS1 he had stomach cramps and was too weak to go on. And one must accept that explanation, in part. He certainly hadnt taken a bad beating at the time of his decision, and was very much in the fight. On all three cards, the scoring was close. What leads one to the conclusion he knew he wouldn't win is his retirement statement immediately after the fight. Hes almost 30 and beyond his peak. SUGAR RAY , again the welter champ, is still coming on, and is under 25, the usual peak age of fighters. The guess is that Roberto took 'this second fight primarily for the $8 million he would earn (a good enough reason). AND WHO can say it wasn't a smart decision? Too many fighters go on too long. In retrospect, Duran put on a tremendous performance in beating Leonard in Montreal earlier this year. He could never top that. No one is likely to administer another beating to Leonard any time soon. |
