TM6 TH 5HC?WM tv NoJeTvfce ue6 MAM k&zss Hr A pseudo-biographic- al television movies are telling us (again) this season, the private lives of two deceased blonde beauties major sex symbols 20 were anything years ago but glamorous. The two of course, are the sweet but broodingly insecure Marilyn Monroe, who wanted recognition as a serious actress, and Jayne Mansfield, who believed that a big bosom and a little wiggle were all a female needed to garner fame ... and she was confident she had the right amounts of both. The tragedy of Monroe, of as course, is that though rescreenings of her movies she was a fine prove comediactress and enne, she never got the feedback from critics when it might have helped her to a healthier ego. Because, while the record shows that MM never gave a bad performance, a few otherwise directors earned their halos putting up with her g neuroses. Laurence Olivier, who had a compulsion to honesty trained into him by a stern clergyman father, stands by his statement that he found MM had a dark side: arrogant & k. et 19A0 United Featu non-saint- ly time-waitin- hj.oh 7 rsrMV when she had power (she had a production interest in The Prince and the Showgirl in which Olivier was both and director) and inconsiderate of To this day, Olivier is outraged that an octogenarian character actress was kept waiting for three hours, laced into tight period corsets, while co-st- ar MM her kept flaw- less face and fiddling with those blonde curls until she could camera-read- herself as accept y. the movies she made when she quit the television series, but as one of them stated, Look, isnt it time we stopped picking on her? The problem is with the films, not with her performances. With him she registered both as a competent professional and a likable personality. Its that word professional that can trigger success. Sure the tousled fair hair and s torso made her a pinup girl. But she already had credentials on camera before she became famous. Farrah did dozens of commercials, in only a few of which was her own personality visible. And as even seasoned Broadway actors tell us, Youve got to know your craft to do commercials and be disciplined. You also have to have keen timing when every second counts. So much for Farrah. bra-les- At this point, few remem- ber that Cybill Shepard also found her showcase in television commercials. That led to a good movie role, as a temptress in The Heartbreak Kid, directed by Elaine May. That in turn led to other movies in which she was starred, though miscast, by her longtime romantic interest, Peter Bogdanovich. She was tarred with the cant act epithets. But unlike the blighted beauties of the 1950s, Ms. Shepard seems to see herself as a whole human being, and she gave her private life a chance (married, moved to Memphis and had a baby) before rethinking her career. Now she has just finished her second nightclub booking as a jazz singer in New York. Critics who tended to write her off at first as a dilettante, gave her some applause this time around. One added that her ability as an actress enhanced her skillful use of her voice. In anybodys language that sounds like a compliment. But you have the comfortable feeling that Ms. Shepard can take it or leave Now we keep hearing that Farrah Fawcett, who shot to celebrity status via Charlies says shes been Angels, plagued, often, by the inner question, Am I, or am I not, a real actress? Critics were harsh about it. ASK ME ABOUT TV Could you SOAPY LADY too!
