It has been estimated that retail establishments lose a staggering $3 billion a year to shoplifters. This figures out to some two percent of sales, which is often a higher rate than a firm's profit margin. In addition to the criminal activities mentioned above, fires are another major concern of most citizens, especially home owners and businessmen. THE industrial-commercia- EVEN DURING a recession the protection industry should fare well, especially in methods of detecting internal company crimes. Another positive factor for companies supplying security devices stems from the nationwide pruning of police and fire forces to save costs, thus requiring more private security services. THERE ARE numerous participants in all areas of the protection industry. To certain businesses and firms it is extremely important, while to others it is only a small portion of the total. Nevertheless, there is heavy competition in all phases of the field. Among those firms to which protection activities are l been spreading rapidly throughout the country. But according to reliable sources nine out of ten persons who die in building fires every year lose their lives in residences. Because of the bitterly sharp yearly increase in crime, the protection industry has of course become a large, rapidly growing business. Just before the sandy soil of Parris Island drifts off into the tidal marsh of Port Royal Sound, not far from the plush course where Marines drive golf balls, archeologists are unearthing a chapter of early American history that almost was forgotten. off-dut- y IT IS the town once-thrivin- g of Santa Elena, settled by Spaniards who hoped to use it as a says Dr. Robert L. Stephenson, director of the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina, a project sponsor. SANTA WHAT? Santa Elena was built in the 16th century, before there was a Marine base on Parris Island even before there were U.S. Marines, a federal government, or the British colony of Jamestown. a Louisiana State University professor whose research helped lead archeologists to the Parris Island site, said the existence of a Spanish town there 41 years before Jamestown comes as a surprise to many Americans. THE significance of it has gone unnoticed in standard American history books, passed over along with St. Augustine, Hoffman said. The significance has not been lost on Stanley South of the archeology institute. He hardly has to close his eyes anymore to imagine the wattle New World, setting up a system of government for St. Augustine and Santa Elena as well as a supply route for arms and food. From Santa Elena he had sent explorers as far as the Appalachians, and had arranged for missionaries from Spain to come in and convert the Indians. On a strip of land a few hundred feet wide between the Tidal marsh and eighth hole of the Parris Island Marines golf course, the archeologists are resurrecting "downtown Santa Elena." TEN OF the 12 houses found so far form a ribbon parallel to the shore, a layout similar to St. Augustines. At least one other block of houses. South believes, is underwater now, lost to a rising sea level. The unearthing of Santa Elena is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology at the University of South Carolina in cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps. LEGACY OF a fire volved. In the postholes of Santa Elena's houses South has found large daub, quantities of the plaster used to build walls. When the townspeople went to rebuild they made some roofs of oyster shell mortar instead of the more common palmetto thatching. d d THE FLOOR of one house a hut probably occupied by a slave or soldier was rich in artifacts: It contained fired daub, Spanish pottery, an iron spike, and several charred ears of corn. Italy. Mexico and even China. The Spanish pottery is a type called Columbia Plain, the signature of Spanish sites in the New World. , THE abundance of Spanish pottery serves as one more bit of proof that the site is Santa Elena. Inventories of the town's supplies in 1576 listed 10 olive jars. 156 dozen plates. 135 dozen bowls. 14 dozen pots. 39 dozen pitchers, and a dozen earthenware tubs. The excavators hit paydirt one muggy day last July when they dug 42 pits within a rec-- . tangle laid out by South. To their amazement, they found pottery bits or daub in almost every hole. ON THE Fourth of July they found a linear trench 14 feet wide and 5 feet deep that matched the description of part of the moat of San Felipe II. the second fort built at San- ta Elena. Further digging turned up bastions and other parts of the fort, showing they had surely found San Felipe, a surprise because scholars had thought it was on a island in the sound. A Hstory rewrites itself few hundred feet from San Felipe II stands a handsome marker, erected to Charles-fora fort built by the French in 1562. Professor Hoffman and others say the discovery of San Felipe II and Santa Elena means the Charlesfort site actually is that of San Marcos, the third fort built to protect Santa Elena. EXCAVATION of that site in 1923 by Maj. George Osterh-ou- t of the Marines appears to have left the forts remains intact, South said.
