Show VS!EELEX-0AV- IS NEWS JOURNAL, MAY 1, 1980 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, MAY 1, 1980 By DR. RICHARD SAG About 20 percent of all children will have an episode of wheezing during childhood. Wheezing is a prolonged hissing sound heard at the mouth while breathing out. The sound is caused by the air that is being forced through the narrow bronchial tubes. Most of these episodes are mild and do not require a doctors attention. FIVE percent of all children will have recurrent episodes of ' is v J ' i Ta - By DICK STUCKI , '. There is no doubt that the most popular vegetable in the home garden is the tomato. And it is probably the most talked about and bragged about crop of all. . .v Tammie and Jack Foley demonstrate one of the blows that is common in Karate meets. Asthma is still a major reason for hospital admission, increased school absenteeism, and emotional and financial drains on the family. Asthma is also a uncommon cause of death in the untreated or inade variety developed by the Campbell Soup Company. 'xi f, wheezing. Most of these children will start to wheeze after they reach the age of three years and thankfully grow out of their wheezing after the age of ten. The most common reason which are Dahls Mobile Homes and Layton Drug Store. ONE OTHER fact that faces home gardeners is that there are 100s of varieties of tomatoes for you to choose from. The big problem is knowing which variety will grow best in our area. There is not any one variety that we can say is best, but we can name several varieties that have proven well during trials in this area and have given good results to even the novice gardener. IT SEEMS that every year there are new varieties introduced in seed catalogues, but beware because not all of those varieties are available in the nursery where you may buy your plants. Some of the newer varieties are available though, and we will try to introduce you to some that are available and that have proven good. THE USU Extension Service planted a test planting last year in Farmington at the experiment station and tested 52 varieties. Out of the test came recommendations of some of the newer tomatoes. By far out front of the new varieties was the DX-52-1- THE DX52-1- 2 is one of the best appearing and productive tomatoes of the test. The vines are not too large and are determinant. Determinant means that the plant will grow to a certain height and then grow no higher. The fruit is large, smooth and dark red when mature. An exciting feature of this variety is that large numbers will mature at the same time so you will have plenty to can at one time. The test planting yield was better than half a bushel from one picking on a single plant, and this is not uncommon with proper care. SWEET 100 which is a cherry tomato, had very favorable results. It is a very sweet fruit that is great as a snack. Another good variety is red pack which gives you large fruits that are firm when ripe. THE VARIETY Presto which is from Harris Seed Company is a very unique early season tomato which produces salad sized fruits. The problem with most patio sized tomatoes is that they usually dont have an acceptable flavor, but Presto has very good flavor. Some of the older tomatoes 'should also be considered for your tomato patch. Many of these have been around for years and are still a safe bet in - the garden. Fehlman Graduates Asthma is not always easy to recognize. The child may not have obvious wheezing heard at the mouth. There may be a deep lingering cough with common colds that is identified mistakenly as croup. The child may cough or become short winded with exercise, or when placed in a dusty damp room, or when exposed to certain animals, grasses or foods. quately treated child and occasionally in the very severe asthmatic. IT IS very important to medically evaluate recurrent wheezing and to properly identify asthma. Current advances in research have led to an improved understanding of the disease. While at the present time, there is no cure for asthma, it is reasonable to expect that with proper medical care, most children will lead relatively normal lives with little or no restrictions and decreased school absenteeism. Magazine at the end of the tomato season last fall, the big number one winner was Burpee Early Girl. It is a variety that matures early in the season and will produce a large number of fruits like DX52-1- 2 but earlier in the season, it has good acid and has been a great canner with medium sized fruits. hyperactive airways. Other shots are necessary. hayfever. ONCE ASTHMA is diagnosed, the treatment for each child must be individualized. Factors to be taken into account are the severity of the attack and the cause. Usually, medications are prescribed that work to relax the muscular walls of the bronchial tubes and allow easier air passage Other varieties to remember when picking out your tomato plants are: Fantastic, Moscow and Stone. Most of these varieties are available at garden centers throughout the area. REMEMBER that if you are putting out your plants early, as many people prefer to do at this time of year, you should low temwatch the night-tim- e to put and be ready peratures on them if it is forecast for low temperatures. These can be bought at the garden centers or you can make your own out of newspaper or even grocery bags or old plastic bottles with the bottoms cut out. hot-ha- ts When tomato plants get large most people start to think about a means to hold them up, but be sure to do that thinking now. If you are going to use stakes or even better, cages, you should put them in at the same time as when you plant the tomatoes. This is so that you will not damage the root system and slow the growth down after the plants are growing well. should be educated how to use the medication and at what point to seek further medical support. In general, if the cause is somehow allergy related, it may become necesary to change the childs environment in the house. IT IS not usually necessary to perform major changes like installing central air conditioning, or ripping up all the carpet in the house. The changes that are involved are usually of minor nature, trying to reflect common sense and an understanding of the disease. ; ; In some children, allergy testing is necessary to identify substances which may aggravate the asthma. At times, when avoidance of allergic substances are not possible, family members. Some of these signs are eczema and ANOTHER EARLY variety not to be passed over is Early Cascade. This has been popular with many gardeners in our area, but should be staked. of the child. The parents VERY OFTEN, the child with recurrent night coughing may turn out to have asthma. Any child with recurrent episodes of coughing deserves a medical evaluation to determine the cause. The cause of asthma is not necessarily the same for each child. Sometimes the asthma is an expression of very sensitive airways which become smaller when exposed to viral or other infections, or other physical stimuli. The asthma may be an expression of a chemical imbalance of the lung leading to times, the asthma may be associated with an allergic condition. Other signs of atopic may be found in the child or in other IN ONE survey by Sunset into and out of the lungs. The types of medication and the duration of treatment Are varied according to the needs immunotherapy or allergy AS MENTIONED above, the goal of therapy is a norma! healthy child who can participate normally in all activities without restriction. Recognition of the problem, parental understanding, and an individual approach to each child usually leads to a close approximation of the goal.
