However, once a range is damaged it takes years to correct itself. A DEER foraging study was carried on this winter on the Toone property of the Division of Wildlife Resources near Hennifer to determine where deer are wintering and what their diets consist of, and amount of forage available. This year again elk were trapped at Hardware Ranch to conduct biological studies and to acquire animals to start a new herd in the Bookcliff area. Fifty elk, all cows and calves were transplanted from the ranch to the area east of P.R. Springs. Biologists learned that only 53 percent of the elk cows were pregnant in 1980 as compared to approximately 79 percent in previous years. Also a lower percentage of yearling cow elk were pregnant this year as compared to other years. Information is critical for effective management of the Cache elk herd so that biologists will know if the herd is on the increase or decrease. Using this information hunting regulations can be determined before the range is severely damaged and less elk can be supported. Winter is also the time to trap deer because they come readily to sources of bait feed such as alfalfa, apples, etc. DEER ARE neck collard with plastic collars of different colors. Biologists and hunters report sightings of these deer which help to establish migra- tidn routes and wintering areas. It is believed that East Canyon deer winter along the Davis County face and such a study could confirm this belief. Deer trapping has been carried on for several years in the Price area to learn more about the deer population in that area. Different winter biological studies may have to be when made before 1984-8- 5 Davis County is scheduled to receive its first mountain goat transplant if all previous plantings go as scheduled. Goats are to be transplanted in the Bountiful Peak area from the herd that has been growing in Little Cottonwood Canyon since the mid 1960s. Creek census data is worked up into a meaningful form and evaluated. Electro shocking and gill netting survey data is summa- rized and evaluated, and stocking quotas are evaluated and established. Wildlife management, like any science, requires a certain number of hours of office work, mathematics, and sweat in order to produce a sound program. With the cost of trout feed and the cost to raise fish in hatcheries on the increase, the Division must know where to plant fish to do the most for the sportsman. This means fish survival and catchability must be known. Davis County enjoys year round fishing. This fact along with the Bear Lake Cisco run and the Willard Bay Walleye run which annually anglers, creates the need for winter law enforcement. This to insure that the fish resource is available to all on a fair basis. WITHOUT LAW enforcement on such popular events the possibility for biological damage to the population increases if limits and methods are not enforced. Wildlife law? in general require year round enforcement because violations occur all year long with practically every species. Winter is also the time when residents along the bench areas of Davis and other Wasatch front counties experience deer damage to ornamental plants and orchards. These damage situations must be investigated and remedies made by conservation officers. This is a never ending job from January until April. Often deer must be herded with scaring devices late into the night which makes the conservation officers day a long one. JANUARY through April is also an opportune time to visit after . in d Stroller buggy $20. Car seat, infant seat. Many Barbie dolls, wooden doll crib, two skateR6 boards $7 each.
