OGDEN HIGH has earned the right to enter the event as the number one team from the region by virtue of their perfect record. But then comes the scramble for second place between Davis and Box Elder. After last week's action the standings show the Box Elder crew with a one game lead over in the Darts. The Bees are league action while the Darts are The Bees handed the Darts a setback last week to put them one game up on them 0 2 6-- . THE LAST games are scheduled to be played this Tuesday, after the article has been written but before the paper hits the streets. Davis will play up in Logan while Box Elder will be facing an uphill battle with league leading Ogden. The coaches have already indicated that in the event of a tie they would just as soon go to the coin flip routine as face another playoff before the state tournament begins. THE CONTEST between these two last week was supposed to be a classic rematch since their first meeting was a one point affair on the Darts floor but after a relatively close first half the Bees slowly took control and pulled away in the second half to take a strong win over the Darts. Throughout the contest the Darts were plagued with foul trouble as they sent the Bees to the charity stripe a total of 23 times, of which they converted 20 of them. WITH ONE game left, a Wednesday matchup with Highland on the Ram floor, the Vikings are tied with crosstown rival Bountiful for first place in Region Four. A win by both clubs would result in a tie for the number one spot and a coin flip would decide who goes into the state tournament as the top club. A loss to Highland, who is in third place, one game in back of the two leaders, would put the Vikes in a tie with the Rams and again a coin flip would be in order. 68-4- 6 THIS ENTIRE season seems to be going in ups and downs for the Darts, consistency is something every high school coach tries to get out of his club. When the Darts are on they have a strong club, one which can compete with anyone. Jeff Emery continues to lead the club in just about every department from scoring to rebounding. In the Box Elder loss he was the lone double digit man for coach Mike Gardner ending the night with 13. Pat McGill is another great shooter for the club but he seems to draw a lot of attention wherever he goes and his scoring has dropped off in recent games. He's the type of player though that is due to break out of it in great style and it couldn't come at a better time than this week against Logan. DAVIS HAS a lack of big people in the middle, in other words no height. The teams that have a big front line give the Darts problems but they make up for it with aggressive defense. Brent Padilla will mix it up under the bucket as will Emery and Jeff Robinson. The Darts are in the state THEN TOO, there is the possibility of a loss by both Bountiful and the Vikes which would leave the race in a three-watie. Again the old coin would be needed. Bets are heavy though the Braves will down South. That puts all eyes on the Viewmont battle with Highland on the Rams' floor. This is where the reporter is supposed to say all the big things about playing away from home. The problem there is that the Vikings play better on the road. We haven't lost on the road in league, both losses are at home. Some of our players seem to play better away from home, Paul Hansen is a prime example" noted Coach Ron Johansen. y IF INDEED the Vikes are to beat Highland they will need a good game out of Paul Hansen, who only scored 10 points in last weeks win over Woods Cross and who was plagued with foul problems. Senior Rich Downs played a great game in the win last week scoring 12 points and playing good defense. Juniors Norm Parrish and Kyle Morrell also turned in good efforts, Parrish had 17 and Morrell 9 plus a bunch of steals. Big sophomore John White, starting his second game played well especially on the rebounding. Senior Mike Dolder tournament, when haven't WMKII SB' t !GESI More they been right? However, the draw of the tournament is important and the Davis crew would like the second place finish in the league. Logan should give the Darts a good game and with a win they could pick up the second place spot because few people feel the Bees will beat Ogden. FAMOUS BRAND I played one of his better games getting 13 points and dishing out numerous assists. BOUNTIFUL After all these ballgames it still looks like the luck of a coin flip could decide the fate of the View-mobasketball team. By DAVE VVIGHAM MENS WEST O THE VIKES showed some poise in the win over Woods Cross as they played tough defense when they needed the ball and hit the boards hard. Highland had an easy time with the Vikings in their first meeting and they too have been playing well. So well in fact that since that win they haven't been beaten and are considered to be one of the hottest clubs in the state. ifl 2290 THE MAXWELL brothers, whose father the coach, is have been very instrumental in these wins and continue to be their main scoring threat along with Randy Rawlings on the inside. Many have felt the play of sophomore J. Judkins has been a big factor in their winning streak. Judkins, the younger brother of Jeff, is said to be the best of his brothers at this age. A deadly shot from the outside who plays better than his years in school. THIS COULD be a great high school battle, the Vikings played the Rams man for man in the first meeting and could go to their zone. First place is up for grabs which means a lot to the Viking players. Plus they are away from home, which seems to be their favorite spot.
