Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DA- VIS NEWS JOURNAL, NOVEMBER 29, 1979 DdD m Jr. Colleges Pick Players By DAVE WIGHAM from Clearfieifl, gob never - BOUNTIFUL Just as the local high school players are recognized at this time of the season with post season picks, the junior college all-St- ranks also pick their best players and honor them. DIXIE, SNOW, College of Eastern Utah and Ricks are all members of the Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference and all of them are using players from the Davis County area. Several of the By DAVE WIGHAM Apologies are in order for this weeks column. First to two young high school football players and then another to the supporters of a high school volleyball club. picks this past season, which was named this past week, played their high school football in the County system. RUSSELL JENSEN of Bountiful and Mark Tate of Woods Cross have every reason in the book to be mad at this paper. Last week when we printed the football team from Region Five these two first team picks were left out of the article. Russ was a mainstay in the Bountiful secondary this past season and was one reason the Braves went on to win the state crown. At the first of the season many coaches felt they could throw the ball on the Braves but by the close of the year those coaches had soon changed their minds. MR. JENSEN was a hard worker, and a more dedicated athlete would be harder to find. He isnt the biggest player on the field by any means but very few give the effort that he does. Besides being strong against the pass this defensive back earned a reputation of being a hitter on the run. Mark Tate fell into the plight of many high school players, college and professional as well, that of being an interior lineman. Too often the media fails to recognize the work of these defensive tackles. Mark never failed to get the attention of opposing coaches and players just ask the Bountiful people about the game on the Braves field and theyll admit to how strong Tate was to run on. MARKS TEAMMATES also look to him for leadership as they selected him as a team captain this past season. Mark is an avid sportsman who enjoys all sports. Both these young men are great athletes and both are good students. To go through a season and have the success that these two did was a great accomplishment. THE OTHER apology goes to the Woods Cross people in regards to the volleyball team. The paper was aware of their championship team but time wouldnt allow the picture of the team to be taken. With Thanksgiving in the middle of the week the deadlines for the printer were moved up and we couldnt make connections with the team and coach for a picture. We felt the article and team deserved a photo so we waited a week to get one. CONGRATULATIONS to the Cat volleyball players. Maybe a week late but those are the hazards of running a paper. THE FIRST team quarterback is no stranger to fans in this area as Ben Bubak from Dixie was picked as the top signal caller in the league. Ben played his prep football under Gary Hansen at Layton High. Ben, youll remember, was at quarterback for the Lancers when they lost that heartbreaker to Olympus in the state semifinal game three seasons ago. He will always be remembered for his passing to his favorite target Rick Snow at the Layton school. Another first team pick from Layton was linebacker Wayne Kittrell who also played ball at Dixie. Wayne was also an outstanding wrestler for the Lancers in school and high many were surprised when he opted for football over wrestling but football was always his first did the big'crede'ntials in high school since, the. Falcons didnt have an outstanding season in his senior year but Bob had the desire and talent 1.1 colleges and could very well go to play another two years. Bountiful was High the picks with two from different in represented players RON GRADUATED from the Braves a year ago where he was a linebacker and the kicker for Coach Paul Waite. A very good linebacker in Closeout Special B" the veteran at Ricks despite being in his first season for the Vikings. Kelly was at Bountiful a few years ago and then played freshman ball for Utah. He then served a LDS mission and decided to go to junior college first. He has excellent size and has drawn, the attention of several major college scouts. DAVIS COUNTY fans can be proud of the type of football the local high schools even the college"' play people are picking up on their talents. e Mens Ladies Solid or Print Tunics.
