Red raspberries should be thinned by first removing all weak canes (those that are spindly and generally less than 30 inches high) and most of the suckers. Then thin remaining canes to about seven canes per hill. Where vigorous growth is made, more canes should be left than where the growth is relatively poor. RED raspberries are generally not tipped during the summer as they have little tendency to branch. However if the canes tend to bend over to the ground, they can be cut back until they are self supporting In the spring while dormant, the red raspberry canes should be cut back to four or five feet. In general, the everbearing varieties are pruned like the varieties. The tips that bear the autumn crop do not fruit again the following year. This topping is done by cutting off the end of the canes as they reach the proper height. Canes should not be topped when wet. Toward the end of the first season, the canes send out laterals (side branches). The next season small branches grow from buds on the laterals. Fruit is borne on these small branches. THESE LATERALS should be pruned back in the spring, before growth starts. Fruit from pruned laterals is larger and of better quality than fruit from unpruned laterals. Cut the laterals back so that two to six buds per lateral are left, depending on size of one-cro- mn m i opportunity ERECT AND trailing blackberries are tipped in the summer like black rasp origin. VISIT OUR TOILET TISSUE FOR YOUNG trees, only one emitter per tree is used. Mature trees have two emitters, one about three feet on each side of the tree trunk. The emitters deliver about one gallon of water per hour and the trees are watered for 12 hours every 24-- 3 days. This method is more than five times as efficient as furrow irrigation. A good filter system is required to keep emitters from plugging and lines must be installed with adequate slack keep jo when them from pulling apart lines cool and contract. The underground stems are perennial, sending up a new crop of canes each year from buds. In additions, suckers grow directly from the roots. THE TWO year old canes which have borne fruit should be cut out soon after harvest so the next years canes can grow unobstructed. New growth should also be thinned at this time. This summer pruning and thinning will help reduce the incidence of disease and prolong the life of the plant. When thinning black raspberries remove canes that are under 4 inch in diameter. Most black raspberry plants have four to five canes that are over 2 inch, but if all the canes are smaller than this, cut out all but the two largest. THE YOUNG black raspberry canes should be topped when about two feet high the first summer. This produces a stocky well branched cane for bearing the following PACK Logan, Green lack Springt, Evanitra, 'lemmerer, Ely, Elbe, Net. Tkete Storet Open Sanday. S'ARE.WAY LOTION . |
