There are a lot of activities that sports-minde- d people can get involved in. TENNIS, SWIMMING, golf, soccer, softball, baseball, jogging, track to name a few. This means a lot of people participating and this reporter needs help. During the summer its going to be my goal to bring to your attention some of the people around the county. People like Ken Hackmeister that youll read about in a moment over in the other article. FINDING THESE people that arent always in the footlights or in the newspapers isnt the easiest chore in the world and thats where I need everyones help. If you know of someone that you feel is worth reading about, in any sporting event please drop me a letter to the Clipper office and let me share the information with everyone. IF THERES a special event coming up, drop me a note and let me spread the word to the readers. During the summer Im going to try and let you all know where the high school stars of this past year will be spending their next years of athletic competition. Some have accepted offers, some are still in the deciding aspect, and still others have decided to forego the sports life and devote fulltime to studies. Read about all of them during the summer months. MY JOB, AS I see it, is to bring to your attention some oFthrgreat people that live in this community. Obviously I dont know all of them, so I need sortie assistance. Share with me your friends who run over hill and dale for the pure enjoyment of it. How about your friend that always wins the tennis or golf matches? LETS BRING these heroes out of the closet and onto the page where everyone can enjoy reading about them. Vance received an athleticscholarship to Dixie College for next year. He is a 1979 graduate of Davis High School, kj VANCE JONES honored Alt There are white, red, yellow and orange. White indicates out of water hazard, orange is ground under repair and the yellow indicates a regular water hazard. NOW IF your ball is outside the white markers then you are out of bounds. This then means basically that you lose a stroke and the distance. What you should have done if you thought it went out of bounds is to hit a provisional ball and play it, with the stroke penalty, if you are indeed out of bounds on the original shot If your ball lands inside these red stakes then you take a one stroke penalty and drop the ball two club lengths from the point of entry. THE ORANGE stakes are a golfers dream on the course. These mean that the course is under repair and you get a free drop, as long as you are no nearer the pin. Thats right, no penalty. Why even put these stakes EACH ONE is there for a specific reason. The whites mean youre off the golf course. The reds are there to speed up play in the fact that if you walk from the teebox to where your ball is and its in the trees then you dont have to walk all the way back to hit again. The orange, you remember the ones you pray for, mean that the course is making repairs. This is also denoted by paint around the ANOTHER RULE to be familiar with is the one concerning an immovable object. e like a These are drinking fountain, you can drop two club lengths from the object, no nearer the hole, without a penalty If its a tree though, youre on your own. No other sport best exemplifies this than their softball program. years ago the city decided to break away from the county program and start their own. That first year eight teams competed in the league. Last year another Monday night league was formed and even at that the city had to come up with a Saturday night league to allow all the teams a chance to play. THIS YEAR they had to add yet another league to accommodate the interested parties, and had they had another diamond they probably could have fielded another league. All in all there are 30 softball teams competing in the four A COUPLE of leagues. The four leagues consist of two on Monday evenings and two on Saturday evenings. Again the top clubs from each of these leagues will compete in a tournament at the conclusion of league action in August. IN THE Monday night league played at 1800 South two clubs have remained undefeated. The Aggies, a team comprised of mostly Salt Lake City players with a few local players, have posted a k record as have the team, consisting of all local players. Their big showdown comes on June 18 at 6 p.m. Other teams involved in this league are Cowboy Oil, Central Utah Fabricators, The Brown Baggers, Bills Piano Service, Home Crafters and Swan Creek Village. CLARK President Davis County Bank Those higher and higher prices at the service station pump will be draining your wallet this summer. But theres a lot you can do to put a car on a slimmer diet. Ive asked our researchers to round up practical tips for gas watchers. gas-guzzli- Some people have already taken the short cut to fuel savings by ordering compact cars like the new front-whedrive models from General Motors or s the that Oldsmobile and diesel-eater- Volkswagen offer. However, if youre buying a standard new car, see if you can order one with a higher, more eco- e nomical ratio. It doesnt cost EZRA T. CLARK much extra. And with a higher axle ratio, the rear wheels revolve more times for the same amount of engine work as the standard axle ratio, thus saving gas. Most of us will of course stick with our present cars. What can we do to tame that thirsty tank? There are four important steps we can take on car care: 1. Get an engine tune-up- . Its a good idea to do this every spring, or oftener, anyway. But its vital, if you want to save gas, to have a professional job done on the points, sparkplugs and the rest of the items in the tune-upackage. Also, see if the idling can be set lower, without stalling. A badly car can fritter away 20 percent of the fuel in your tank. p out-of-tu- See that your tires are inflated to the full recommended pressure. tires can waste up to five percent of your fuel. 3. Get a front-whealignment, if you havent had one in the last six months. When wheels and tires are out of line, you increase tread wear and decrease gas mileage. 4. Replace the air filter in your car about every 6,000 miles. A dirty filter fouls up the proper fuel-ai- r mixture. What else can we do to get more mileage for our money? Change our driving habits, if they need changing and they probably do. Here are five ways: 1. Keep it down to double nickles on the highway. Most Americans have been exceeding the limit on interstate routes in the last few years, according to the Federal Highway Administration. That speed limit saves gas and lives. 2. Combine trips around home. Many short trips, rather than one longer trip, are fuel wasters. When you go to the supermarket, stop at the dry cleaners and the drug store all in one run. 3. Get into a car pool or a van pool going and coming from work. 4. Get rid of the excess baggage youve been carrying around all year in the cars trunk. Extra weight can cost you, the motorist, like it costs on overseas airlines. 5. Accelerate smoothly from standing stops, drive with a constant, steady speed, anticipate stoplights. Lurching wastes gas. Good luck with your gas tank diet! I hope that some of these tips on saving fuel will help pay for the cost of your summer vacation. 2. Baking the same pork chops in an electric frypan (1250 watts) will use only 0.558 kwh a savings of almost half. One thousand watts of electricity ( 1 kilowatt), delivered over a r period, equal 1 kilowatt hour (kwh). You are billed for the kwh you use each month. If your cost per kwh is 5C (you can figure your average rate from last month's power bill), it will cost about 2 12C to cook those pork chops in the electric frypan. Small appliances often save energy in the kitchen, but the savings depend on the amount and kind of food you cook. The electric frypan saves with many different foods besides entrees such as pork chops, it can make popcorn, bake apples, heat TV dinners, steam plum puddings, and keepfood warm. The use of a simple wire rack in the frypan lets you use dry heat to bake potatoes or other foods. The regulated temperature control helps you turn out perfect fudge or peanut brittle every time. So, become friends with your electric frypan. You'D save electricity and money. one-hou- QOIlclGM PODDDDBI P strong |
