SALT LAKE CITY - Three area high school basketball players were awarded honors this past year while many others earned second team and allregion honors as the season awards finally came to a all-sta- - WOODS CROSS Usually when a school takes up a new sport they take their lumps for the first few years but then once they catch on and play that sport for a couple of seasons, they start getting a few wins. SUCH IS the case with the Woods Cross soccer club. Now entering their third year of varsity competition the Wildcats are settling a few scores they had along the way. A few wins would be a gross understatement of this team, already they have established themselves as a top club. This year for the first time in soccer there will be a state tournament in both the 3A and the 4A ranks. WOODS CROSS would have to be a strong contender for timistic about his clubs chances in the state, the first task is qualifying for that event and currently the Cats are second in league action with one loss to league-leadin- g Bountiful. Already they own victories over Viewmont, Judge, Skyline and Murray. CROSS counts on two players in goal with WOODS seniors Chuck Banford and Jeff Athman splitting the time. Chuck was the varsity keeper a year ago. The fullbacks combine youth with experience as the Cats have two seniors and a couple of sophomores in the lineup. Danny Donahue and Gregg Buttars are the seniors with the experience while Jon and Jeff Maughn are the underi lassmen Lee IHE HAIFBACK line is headed up by junior Harve Omara who has been a big clog in the Wildcat soccer program since arriving at the school two years ago. Alongside him are seniors Paul Lane and Chris Hansen with sophomore Jay Barber. Senior Louis Castillo is the top goal getter for the Cats. Danny is the link between the defense and the offense but he isnt afraid to go up and take his share of shots either. Senior Steve goalie Benedict earned honorable mention status last season and is considered one of the best in the state this year Already this season he has recorded three shutouts. Backup keeper for the Braves is senior Kevin Butts who e could be playing for a lot of teams but is the substitute for Benedict SFMORS Randy Linnell and John (oey hold down a couple of fullback spots on the club. John is in his first vear of varsity play while Randy has been a mainstay for three years. Mike Lindquist and Neiville Allen split the playing time at the other fullback position. In high school soccer the halfbacks are the backbone of a good club and the Braves have three of the best. Besides Danny Parkhurst, the Braves look to senior Brad Steed and junior Grant to hold down the opposition. Brad has been playing for three seasons while played a lot last year as a Bel-na- p Bel-na- p sophomore. Utah Foster Childrens FORWARDS are supposed to score goals and the trio of Braves on the forward line are extremely good at this. Parkhurst established him- self last season as a top goal getter and now he has senior Steve Riley and junior Elton Loy to help him. This past season the Davis County fans were treated to some of the best basketball in the state and these awards ness for his height. JUNIORS Don Brough and Mike Weddington along with sophomore Brent Magon are the top three substitutes for JUNIOR Craig Cook is back at fullback as one of the two players on this years team have played varsity soccer before this season.
