Show WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- IS NEWS JOURNAL, JUNE 16. 1977 Area Athletes And Their College Plans By DAVE W1GHAM As mentioned in the last column I wrote last week, I was going to try' and find out where and why some of the athletes who graduated this past year plan on attending college next fall PROBABLY THE biggest name player who has decided on his future is Layton Highs Johnny Gilbert. Word from Layton is that the former Lancer great has signed to play next year at Dixie Junior College. That means that Gilbert will be traveling south with a couple of other Utah players. Neil Roberts, who led Skyline to two state championships is the new' head basketball coach at Dixie and besides Johnny he has signed se' eral of his players for next year. GILBERT, AT could be the sleeper of the Utah crop last jear. He has the potential to become one of the top big men in the area next year. 6-- Mindy Hanline Receives Other Layton graduates who have decided on the higher education are Curtis Page and Sam Beeson. Both hm e chosen Snow College to play football next year. Sam will also probably be involved in the track program. Sam indicated that they both liked the coach and his style of play and w ill use the junior college to fulfill the general requirements for graduation. Presidential Sports Award The Presidential Mindy Hanline for her dedication and determination in the sport of tennis. Mindy achieved the award while playing on the girls tennis team at Davis High School and for the Ogden Racquet and Swim Club. .MARTY MALMROSE has accepted a scholarship to the College of Fastern I'tah to play both baseball and basketball next season. A friend and teammate of Malrqrose, Dale Ohlson has also decided to play basketball at C.F.U. next year. Marty chose the school for a chance to plav both sports, while Dal raw a chance to tart next year as the school was hit hard by graduation. AT DAVIS she is copy edi- tor for the yearbook, debate team secretary and girls sports reporter for the Davis Dart. Mindy is a manager for the girls volleyball and basketball teams and has served as FBLA vice president and debate team historian. She is a member of the United States Tennis Association and the American Junior Bowling Congress. Mindy has consecutively won the City Tennis Championship in her age group four years. She is the daughter of Alan and Mary Hanline, 1184 Viewmonts two big men, Tim Eden and Court Wilkins, both plan on playing several sports at Southern Itah State next season. Football, basketball, track and baseball could all profit from these tw'o fine athletes. They too wanted a place to go where they could play more than one sport. KEVIN WALKER could go to several colleges for different sports. Westminster wants him for basketball, he has been accepted to BYU and could play baseball for the Cougars. But in talking to Kevin, his heart is at Oklahoma University. He plans to go to school there and try out for basketball. His parents w'ere back in Oklahoma and planned on contacting the coach. There are many others in the area going to accept scholarships. I wall try to find out others and their plans. Devon Road, Kaysville. Softball: Biggest Increase Participation Of Any Event By DAVE W1GHAM case you havent noticed in the papers or on the In television, increase in the biggest participation for a sporting event has been taking place over the past several years in softball. the sport of ABOUT TEN years ago softball was considered a girls sport. The men stayed away from it. But over the past three or four years the number of teams participating has increased. One of the reasons for the increase in popularity for the sport has been the lack of programs in baseball. In Utah for example, once past the American Legion program, organized baseball almost ceases to increase. UTAH HAS fast become a hot spot in the West for their softball teams. Salt lake City has some of the top teams in the country with several of 'hem always finishing in the top five on the national level. People from Davis County are involved m those Salt jke City teams Probably 'he top team in Itah during the past ion years has been FMA Roadrunners. Several of their players are Davis County grown. Gary Cleverly, who played baseball at Viewmont and the University of Utah, is a main stay on the club playing second base. the OTHER local players who participate in the tough Metro league in Salt Lake City are Alan Cleverly, Guy Memmott and Eldon Hansen who all play for the Competition team. The Cullimore brothers, Brent and Val, play for the Page Brake squad. With these two new additions, Page has become a contender for the title. Val, who coaches baseball at Viewmont, likes the sport for him. SUN-r.COP- .1 Phone 376-203- ANSWERS TO SPORTS QUIZ Seattle Slew Jack N'cklaio- 1. 2. 5 3.
