Show f WEEKLY REFLEX-DAV- NEWS JOURNAL. MAY 5. 1977 IS i mm Writes, Wins Dave county team is comparable to the high school team in the United States, he said. DAVES FATHER Hugh, who taught Dave to play, played with his son for six years in the Utah Soccer League. Then Dave quit the team because I kept getting hammered and it wasnt worth it." Dave also played high school football at Bountiful High and won a football scholarship to Ricks. He has played Automotive and American Legion baseball and has been on numerous championship baseball and softball, teams. HE GOT into sports writing because he' always loved sports. I understood all the games and had played most of them so 1 decided to see if I could watch the games and get paid for writing about them. He worked for the Deseret News as a correspondent, covering high school sports in Davis County, beginning in 1971. He was hired as a news writer for the Clipper in Nov. 1975 and became a full time sports writer in August. Dave graduated with a BS degree in journalism from Weber in March of this year, after writing sports stories for six years, rk Dave Wigham, Davis County Clipper sports writer, has written about a lot of golf tournaments, but didnt plan to win one himself. Last week he won second place in the Bountiful Springs Icebreaker Tournament, shooting an 81. all-sta- DAVE SAID he didnt take golf seriously until last year. Prior to that, I was lucky to play more than four rounds a year. His tournament win was his fifth round this year. I was pleased because I won a $30 gift certificate and a trophy. But golf is only one of Daves sporting interest. He learned to play soccer before he came to the United States. Dave, who was born in Tripoli, North Africa while his father was in the British Army, says he learned to kick the soccer ball almost before he learned to walk. ALTHOUGH Dave moved to America when he was 13, he has never taken out citizenship papers and is still a British citizen. He played on the soccer team for Bountiful H igh and made the team for three years. Dave said, had he not moved to the United States, he planned to play profes- sional soccer.
