Show Page Six - The Pyramid - December 25, 2003 Message of the season Christmas reflections Dear Friends: Once again weve come full circle. The Christmas Season is here! It will not be long before it is 2004! These are times of transition and are bound to evoke some bittersweet feelings for many of us. I find my thoughts wandering in two different directions. ..times of reflections and., perhaps, resolutions. Reflecting upon the past is part of our unique human gift of memory. Reflections enable us to, in a sense, live again those experiences which touched our lives deeply... loved ones gone.. .and ...good times. ..gone. Yet, sometimes, this gift catches us by surprise or enters int our minds like an unwelcome visitor. For not all our memories are marked by feelings of joy and peace, of satisfaction and contentment. Some are filled with pain, sorrow and even regret. But whatever particular events or rites of passage we may have experienced in this past year, there is something they all have in common. The Psalmist puts it this way ...Wither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or wither shall I flee from they presence? If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I makd my bed in Sheol, thou art there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there thy hand shall lead me, And thy right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139. So there we have it. That is one thing we dont have to concern ourselves about. We are never alone. On Him we can depend. For me, the older I become and the longer I travel on my spiritual journey, the more I come to realize and appreciate Gods abiding presense. And even with our doubts and struggles and faith as small as a mustard seed, we can step forward to the next moment, the next day, the next year for we are sustained by His eternal love and care. In second focus which comes to mind at this time of year is that of resolutions. Making a list of promises to ourselves can be fun and challenging and for some of us a real test of our creativity and imagination. The hard part though, is keeping them, lining up to our commitments... day after day. Resisting those all too human temptations, trying to break old habits, perhaps even adding another virtue to our patterns of personal behavior - thats hard work! But, whatever our resolutions may be for 2004, I think fundamental questions we should ask ourselves is who is at the center of our life? Self or neighbor and who is the focus of our thoughts and aspirations - me or Thee? "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have prophetic powers, and understand all.. .but have not... I am..." "He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted.. to det at liberty those who are oppressed. Luke 4:18. During a December visit to New York Cityi Metropolitan Museum of Art, I paused to admire the magnificent Christmas tree. It was covered with angels and surrounded at its base by an elaborate nativity scene. Nearly 200 figures including shepherds, the Magi and a crowd of townsmen, looked in anticipation toward the manager or gazed up in awe at the angels. But one figure appeared different from the rest, a barefoot man, who carried a heavy load on his back and looked at the ground. It struck me that this man, like so many people today, was so weighed down that he couldnt see the Messiah. Christmas can be a difficult time for those who carry the burden of hard work stressful family situations and personal loss. But we should remember that Christ came into our world to lift up all those who are bowed down. n Jesus used the words of Isaiah to announce His mission on earth: "To heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed." Jesus came to lift our burdens so we can raise our eyes to welcome Him at Christmas. Help us. Lord, to give our burdens to Your tender, loving care; grant us faith to trust You fully, knowing that each one You bear. First Presbyterian Church Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. Peace to you all, Pastor David Boge First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant , God-give- Market news At this time of the year we pause to reflect upon the name which this holiday season bears. It is a name which brings to memory a simple life and a great example of how to live. Jesus Christ was and is truly the light and life of the world. Winston Churchill once said, We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." Christmas is a time of giving but it is important to remember that is isnt the material gifts we give, but the gift of self that brings the true Spirit of Christmas. We would especially like to remember those who are giving of themselves in defense of this country and the freedomes we hold so dear. As an LDS stake presidency, we extend to each of you our warmest holiday greetings and our sincere desire that at this time of the season and throughout the new year, you may Find peace in your life by giving of yourselves.
