Show Page Two - The Pyramid - November 6, 2003 Merrill Ogden Booking report Sanpete politics As I write this, the results of Sanpete's municipal elections are yet to be determined. Generally, the com- munities in the county had strong interest in the political races as measured by the numbers of people who "threw their hats into the ring." During the campaign I asked myself season, several times what is it that motivates people to run for office. On the surface, to me at least, the logical scenario would be to run FROM office. I mean, who needs that bother? The bother of being responsible for dealing with all the hub-bu- b of keeping a town operating in some sort of reasonable fashion. As I thought about this question, 1 came up with a list of why a person would run for mayor or city council in a Sanpete town. So here are my suspected reasons that a person would give as motivations for seeking political office. 1. Im an insomniac anyway, so I may as well be up in the night taking calls from people comabout plaining balking after all, the It is, dogs. city councils fault that they bark. 2. I need to augment my income. On average as a city official Ill earn about a dollar per hour. That beats farming. 3. I want to be the one who says, "1 make the motion that we table this issue and study it for a few months." 4. 5. I lost a bet. Theres nothing good on .TV on Wednesday nights anyway ( fill in whatever night city council meets in your town). 6. I heard that those of Cities Utah League are a real conventions blast. I might even get a free motel room and a breakfast buffet. 7. I want it to be me pictured in the newspaper holding those big scissors cutting the ribbon when the new restrooms are opened at the city park. 8. Three words: Power, Fame, Glory. 9. I called the Psychic Hotline. One thing led to another. 10. This is the first step in my long range plan to become administrator of MAN I- I- Activities on the booking County Sanpete repot t are as follows: Oct. 27 Lee Gonzales, Mt. Cody was arrested in Pleasant, Manti by the Sanpete County the Environmental Protection Agency. I know that Aristotle said, "Man is by natute a animal" and I political know that he also said, "Nature does nothing uselessly." Ergo, there are "non-useless- reasons political " Sheriffs people are seek public- - office. Iiy not so cynical as to believe that my list above has too much resemblance to reality. (At least in Sanpete County, anyway.) The fact is, there are Sanpete people who are sincerely motivated by a feeling of wanting to serve. These candidates are sometimes, actually often, the people who already have more than enough to do in their lives. Despite all their "brands in the fit e, " they simply want to do what they can to maintain the good things in their until and to improve things otherwise. In this county, running for a municipal office is not a money thing. Its not a convenience tiling. Its not a fame and glory thing. Its a nutty, glutton for punishment. Hopefully this will be a winter season with lots of snow, otherwise we may have to learn how to drink dirt! So in hope of lots of snow, we need to prepare for winter driving conditions. The leading cause of death during winter storms is transportation crashes. Winter driving conditions can turn small mistakes into serious problems. braking, Accelerating, and cornering all call for extra control on snow and ice. Your most important responsibility as a winter driver is your ability to anticipate problems so that you dont lose control in the fit st place. Can you see? After a storm, make sure you brush off your vehicle of excess snow. Let your vehicle warm up and defrost your windows. Its amazing to see cars going down the road at 50-6- 0 miles per hour and the driver only has a small patch of clear windshield to see out of. You must be able to see clearly - to tlieTront, back, and both sides. If your side and rear windows are frosted over, you could be cited. If your wiper blades are not wot king properly in a storm because of a build up of' snow, ice, or slush, pull over at a safe location and clean them. One of the biggest lems some drive snow NOT! I water in the trunk in case you get stuck somewhere for a while and have to wait for prob- we see is speed. For reason we think we can the same speed on as we do on dry roads. i J help. you do get stuck or break down, stay with the If. vehicle. It is easier to spot a large vehicle instead of a small body. It also gives you shelter from the elements. Use common sense and winter driving should not be a problem. Remember to SLOW DOWN and give yourself more time to get to The speed limit during a snowstorm could be 20 miles per hour on the interstate during a bad storm. I can just about guarantee that if you are driving too fast and slide off the road, you will be cited for speed too fast for conditions. The first big snowstorm of the season is always the worst. We live in an area where bridges and overpasses ice over very easily and usually before the rest of the road turns to black ice. So even if the roads look good, slow down crossing bridges and overpasses. If you see the bridge is bad and do anything to change your speed, you could lose control and crash. You want to maintain a constant speed on bad roads and you want to be a lot slower than you usually drive. Also, make sure you travel prepared. Put some warm blankets, a flashlight, and a shovel in your trunk. It would also be a good idea to have a little food and your destination. Terry C. We were at our second home in Mt. Pleasant and were trying to smooth a large hill of gravel to make a driveway. We had worked for a while, but it was quite hard for us since we are both senior citizens. Soon, a wonderful Scout leader and some wonderful young Scouts came to our door to ask if they could do a service project by removing the gravel and smoothing it with their shovels. They could tell we were struggling to finish the job. I was so thrilled that we were going to have help and so was my husband.
