PLEASAN- T- North Sanpete Hawks basketball team came soaring out of the gate Tuesday evening with a season1 win over Uintah opening Utes. Shandon Shepherd, senior forward, looked to be in midseason form as he poured in 38 points to lead the Hawks. The Utes were forced to take chances on defense or foul and send the Hawks to the line. Ute starters Jordan Brady and Derek Sutton got in foul trouble, which spelled double trouble for Uintah. 92-8- Not only did starters spend a lot of time riding the bench, the Hawks were deadly at the foul line. North Sanpete hit 34 of 44 free throws in the game while the Utes were 16 of 20. The Hawks kept the Utes at arms length, and put the game away with free throws down the Uintah jumped to a 0 lead, but couldnt pull away maintaining just a small lead throughout 4-- the first half. As time ran out before halftime, North Sanpetes Adrian Kjar nailed a to give the Hawks their first lead three-point- of the game, 43-4- er Hawks built on that momen28-1- canned an eight-fojumper as the third quarter buzzer sounded to give the Hawks a Nunley ot commanding 71-5- 0 lead. Utes made a game of it, reeling off 15 unanswered points to open the final period. With their lead reduced to six, the Hawks steadied themselves and began playing an effective ball control offense. This week the Hawks traveled to Nephi to take on the Wasps on Tuesday, and will host Meridian on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. This coming weekend the Hawks travel to Cedar City for a tournament at Southern Utah University. There they will take on Canyon View on Dec. 3 and Cedar City on Dec. 4. first-hal- f, f, 5. 1- -2 Whites squad with a overall record and sets them up for South Conference Western Athletic (SWAC) play, which begins this Friday, Dec. 3 when Snow hosts Dixie College at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Badgers first game in the Memorial Tournament was Oklahoma Northeast against College (NEO), a strong and physical team from Miami, OK. started Snow out strong against NEO, building a lead in the first half behind the scoring of sophomore, Nicole Paul, who had 16 points in the games first 20 minutes. However, NEO took over in the second-ha- lf and slowly pulled away 9 down the stretch for a 8-- 2 threw in 12 points in the losing effort. In the tournaments final game. Snow was matched up against Olney Community College from Central Illinois. The physical nature of the first two games began to show against Olney as the Lady Badgers found a way to put out a scintillating, 90-8- 1 overtime victory. nt 91-7- victory. Paul finished the game with 28 points followed by Anna Bateman, Alisha Hayden and Casey Cooke, who had 18, 12, and 10 points respectively. The following night. Brian Gardner led the Badgers in scoring against Riverside, tallying 23 points, followed by Hala Kaufusi and Justin Bradshaw, who had 16 and 15 points respectively. Matt Tullis grabbed a team-higeight boards. The following night against Mount San Antonio Community College, the Badgers regrouped and came away with a 75-7- 2 victory. Tullis had a big game for Snow, scoring 20 points, pulling down seven boards and swiping eight steals. Gardner had 13 h, h, points and Jeremy Sargent came away with nine rebounds. In the consolation bracket. Snow went up against Moorpark Community College and came 0 away with a victory. Still own their miscues and plagued by turnovers, the Badgers managed to play well enough to return home with fourth place. Riverside CC took first place, finishing the tournament with a perfect, 0 record. After the Citrus Tournament, 69-9- 3-- the Badgers now own a 9-- 1 overall record and host nationally ranked, Dixie College, this Friday to the Activity Center for a 7:30 p.m. showdown. He becomes the fourth Badger quarterback to be named first team in the last five years. Hannum guided the first year head coach Mike Empeys offense to an average of 484 yards per game, ranking them second in the nation for total offense. Romney led the nation in receptions, hauling in 70 passes for 1,108 yards as a freshman, Keisel, a transfer from Brigham Young University, led the Badgers defense in points this year as Harwood finished first in the league with six interceptions. The Badgers finished the regular season ranked 15th in the nation.
