Show December 1, 1999 - The Pyramid - Page Three Preparing home computers for Y2K Hospitals by Eric Hawley, USU Network Specialist LOGAN-- - Anyone that has an older home computer can now check it for Y2K compliance, according to Eric Hawley, Utah State Univerity (USU). There are two parts of a computer that need to be checked, software, such as operating systems, Windows or DOS for example, and applications like WordPerfect, Excel, Quicken, or others; and hardware such as the CPU, memory, motherboard and disk drives. Most Y2K problems are found in the computer BIOS, basic inputoutput system, which provides information the computer needs to know all the time to keep it running. If the BIOS is not Y2K compliant, the system could fail, even if all of the software is ready. The best thing to do is contact the manufacturer of the computer. Before checking the hardware, create a bootable floppy disk. In Windows 95, 98, or NT right click on the floppy drive icon in "my computer", choose "format" and check the "Copy System Files" checkbox. When checking a system, its best to do it by booting from this floppy so as not to cause a Y2K crisis today instead of January. There is automatic check, commercial software, designed to check for Y2K compliance, that can analyze the system hardware and BIOS. There are many software packages or tools that do this and some of them are free. One is available from the Utah State University (USU) Extension county agent or can be downloaded from http:www.ext.usu.-eduy2- k. This will test whether the BIOS and system clock are in good shape or need further testing. It will also certify that leap year is computed correctly and test other critical Y2K dates for the next decade. ' After that is complete it may ask to perform manual tests. One manual test is to boot from the floppy and change the system 2 FOR 1 SPECIAL! "Is The Bible Really Gods Word?" "Does It Matter What You Believe?" Secretary of the Interior, Bruce Babbitt announced that this years payment is nearly $6 million more than last years total, which was $119 million. The BLM, an agency of the Interior Department, distributes the PILT payments to eligible units of local governments each year. The payments are intended to offset the loss of tax revenue to states, and localities caused by the presence of Federal land within jurisdictions. BLM Acting Director Tom Fry said that PILT carries out an especially important role for the BLM, which manages more land than any other Federal agency. "PILT is one of the ways that they Federal Government can fulfill responsibilities to communities throughout the West," said Fry. "Through these payments, local governments carry out such vital services as fire fighting and police protection, construction of public school and roads."
