Show Page Four - The Pyramid - October 27, 1999 Cross country team places fourth in championships SALT LAKE CIT- Y- On Oct. 20, state qualifiers came from all corners of Utah to participate in the cross country Utah High Athletic Association School (UHSAA) Championship. Among the local qualifiers, North Sanpete Lady Hawks Cross Country team came home with a fourth place finish in only a second appearance ever at the state meet. In doing so, they also bested the other Region 8 qualifiers as well as all 3A teams north of Cedar City. Indeed, with three freshman and one sophomore among the top five scoring runners, the future of the program looks at least encouraging at the teams excellent showing. Pacing the team again for the Lady Hawks were Kylara and Fountain Khirsta Papenfuss, Green. They traded the lead for the team several times during the 3.0 mile course in Sugarhouse Park. Ultimately it was the freshman Kylara who finished first for the team, in 14th place, 20:51. Khirsta was 18th in 21:01. Meanwhile sophomore Kristen Morley and freshman Amber Boekweg paced each other to strong finishes, Kristen in 32nd In his fourth and final appearance at the state meet, senior Morley ran to a 34th place finish in 17:37, w'hile sophomore Curtis followed in 46th in 17:55 over the hilly course. Region 8 individual champion, Topher Barnett, Richfield, was 4th in 16:33 while his team, also region champions, placed 5th. Wasatch Academy also competed successfully in the 1A Championship races. The best individual performance of the day for the Tigers went to senior Yuko Kawamata, running as an individual in the girls race. Her 24:00 time was good enough to earn a 21st place finish. Also competing in the girls race were seniors Anna Scholz, 33rd and Sarah Allan, 37th. The Tigers posted an ,8th place finish as a team in the boys 1A championships Guylin Sky paced the team en route to a 34th place finish. He was closely followed by senior Janis Putrams, and sophomore Colin Lasater. Kuni Dorjee and Neo Jang completed the scoring for the team, which finished with 201 points. The Jayhawks from St. Joseph walked away with the team honors in the first year back in the 1 A classification. place, 21:51, and Amber in 36th place, 22:00. Freshman Kristen Mellor completed the team scoring with her fifth place finish for the team, with team captain Debbie Lee and junior Carlee Sanders rounding out the varsity seven. The girls team total of 158 points was fourth behind champion Cedar City, Canyon View and Pine View. Despite a third plar finish Oct. 13 at region, the Lady Hawks at state bested rivals Delta by three points, and Richfield, 1999 Region Champions, by 45 points. "It was a team that just got better and better each week," commented Coach Bill Bedford. He stated that he knew they could run with anyone in Region 8 and that Region 8 schools would compete well at the state level, but he was not quite expecting the team to shine like they did. He stated that it was a testimony to the dedication and spirit of the girls. They believed in themselves. Running in the 3A boys state championships were Hawk cocaptains Bret Morley and Jared Curtis. The road split gave Snow a 9 SWAC record and a 1 overall mark. EPHRAI- 17th-rank- 3-- 17-2- The recent road trip began with Alene, ID, to face the Cardinals from NIC last Thursday. The Lady Badgers lost to the Cardinals a month ago in Ephraim after soundly winning the first two games, only to let NIC sweep the next three and the match. The Number one ranked Eagles from Southern Idaho are the sixtime defending NJCAA champions, but are coming off their first SWAC loss in six years, losing to SLCC last Friday in five. The Lady Badgers will host CSI on Thursday at 7 p.m., and TVCC on Saturday at 5 p.m. Lady Hawks take region MT. North Sanpete wasnt completely out of luck as Coach Christensen won the flip for region champs. North Sanpete will enter the State Volleyball Tournament as the first place team from Region 8 with an overall season record 10-The first game of the match was a game of complete turn arounds. Callie Johnson started the game for the Lady Hawks serving an ace and completing five service points. Rachel Allred followed the lead serving six points of her own. North Sanpete was up 11-- 1 before Delta knew what happened. Then Delta got on the score-boar- d with two points. Delta went wild scoring the next 13 points. North Sanpete had its chances and at least twice thought the game was won. The volleys ended up in side outs due to controversial calls. Delta continued a scoring streak going ahead of the Lady Hawks 6-North Sanpete began to pick things up with Milly Christensen at the service line.
