New coaches of the team this year are Beckie Hermansen and Jeremy Middleton. "We are excited about both teams," said Coach Hermansen, "because we have talent. Cross country teams run in Orem Kiwanis MT. PLEASAN- T- Cross country action continued its midseason pace with local high school teams participating in two races this week. First was the Region 8 contest hosted by Emery High School in Castle Dale, then the Orem Kiwanis race at the Utah Valley State College (UVSC) campus. At Emery, the teams ran a 3.0 mile course that followed local roads near the high school. As expected, the boys race was dominated by the Richfield Wildcats, who finished first with 19 points. Only Carbons Jacob Smith was able to penetrate Richfields top five and eliminate the possibility of a perfect score of 15 by the Wildcats. The Hawks ran flat and rather uninspired to take fifth. Bret Morley led the team with a ninth place finish in 18:33. Wasatch Academys Guylain Sky was first in for the Tigers in 20:08. The girls race however, featured excellent team running by the Lady Hawks as they reinforced a number 2 ranking in Region 8 behind only Richfield. 8th and 9th place finishes in the 3A division. Wasatch Academys meanwhile, Yuko Kawamata, received a medal for her 9th place finish in the 1A and 2 A girls varsity race. "It was great to see our runners get some recognition at such a big race," commented Coach Bill Bedford. "They have been train" ing hard and it is paying off. Kristen Kylara Papenfuss, Morley and Amber Boekweg all posted top 10 finishes to pace the team to 64 points. Other varsity scorers were Khirsta Papenfuss and Debbie Lee. Wasatch Academys Yuko Kawamata ran a strong race to place 18th in 23:-52. Orems Kiwanis Invitational, the largest high school meet in Utah, drew about 40 teams from three states to race the 3.1 mile course on the grass fields of UVSC. The scope and atmosphere of the event took on the feel of a major championship due to the "Almost to a person the team ran superbly in this race. If we size of the field and quality of runners. Awards for the races were broken down into school classification, and local athletes were for appropriately recognized accomplishments.
