Show Page Two - The Pyramid - August 25, 1999 Golden Acorn to celebrate 50 years Merrill Ogden Back to School Schools are back in session in Sanpete. Up and down the county, from kindergarten to Snow College, the kids are sitting attentively with hands clasped at their desks ready to absorb knowledge. Education is now the business at hand for our young people. Its time for those essays entitled, "What I Did on My Summer Vacation. " I feel for the students of today. There is so much to learn and so many pressures in preparing for an occupation and life in general. Its a complex society to fit into. The innovations in technology and computer fields are hard to keep up with even on a superficial basis. The educational process is always under scrutiny (as it should be) by all of us "arm" chair Every quarterbacks. parent has their own opinion on how the school should accommodate and teach their child. It seems to be very popular for parents to be "in- education. should it as be.) (Again, In the face of this, though. with volved" sometimes feel that we need to let schools do their job and the "breathing give them room" and authority to do it. I dont believe that corporal punishment should be reinsti-tute- d in the classroom. (There might be exceptions to that belief.) But teachers deserve to have the respect of their students and the tools to maintain order. I survived some "teacher reminders" in my education which would probably generate a law suit from many of todays parents. (One teacher I had frequently reminded us of his shoe size. As I recall it was 11. You could say that fifth grade was a. real J' kick-but- t" year for us.) I believe All in all, Sanpete has good schools. We produce I SF Auction fine young people who enter colleges and universities; trade and specialty schools and enter the work force otherwise. All of us in Sanpete can help with the schooling of our youth. (If youre a property owner and seen your valuation notice, maybe you think that youre helping enough already.) Here are three simple things we can do as school starts again: 1. Drive safely. Watch for kids on the street as they come and go to school. 2. Encourage every student in your "circle" to be involved in something positive as school gets rolling. (There are few things worse than feeling like youre on "the outside ") 3. Be involved with the but school as appropriate, dont be a psychotic "nervous Nellie" or a "my kid can do no (Sometimes wrong" parent. kids need a staunch defender and other times they need to "face the music.") Now someone out there is going to ask, "What makes this guy qualified to make these statements and give this advice?" My answer is, "Nothing, other than having been a student and now being the parent of students. Its just my opinion. If you want your opinion heard, all you have to do is address a letter to the editor." ...Merrill P.S. Thanks to the fair board for another great job The 1999 edition of the Sanpete County Fair was terrific. The fair was a success, even though the weather at times seemed more like Seattle than Sanpete. The parade Saturday went forward in "on again, off again" cloudbursts. The many royalties in the parade are to be commended for maintaining their composure in what could cbe describee as a "wet evening gowii" fashion show. (Dont get me wrong, they were modest, but soaked.) ...MRO SPANISH FOR- K- Livestock auction for Aug. 18. Receipts: 225; last week: 300; last year: NQ. Feeder steers and heifers too few to compare.
