"A cartoon pictures a wealthy but tired old dowager saying to her husband, Gad Henry, here is Christmas at our throats again." . been thinking about Christmas, yours and mine, and wondering what it will be like. For some people, Christmas will be bedlam. Bone-tire- d clerks, bedraggled waitresses and bleary-eye- d will try to sleep with cash register bells ringing and bookkeepers neon lights flashing in their minds. Frederick Buechner in The Magnificent Defeat has the innkeeper in Bethlehem say; "I speak to you as men of the world. Do you know what its like to run an inn, to run a business, a family, to run anything in this world for that matter, even your own life? It is like being lost in a forest of a million trees, and each tree is a thing to be done. Is there fresh linen on the beds? Did the children put on their coats before they went out? Has the letter been written, the book read? Is there money enough left in the bank? ...A million trees. A million things... Finally we have eyes for nothing else, and whatever we see turns into a thing." I do not want to be an innkeeper this Christmas, someone who sees objects but does not see children. Business, parties, Christmas cards, trees and tinsel press too tightly. Grim faces peer into store windows and tired faces peer back out. W.H. Auden in For the Time Being says that on Christmas Day, Everything became a You and nothing was an It. This Christmas, Im holding time for some persons and a Person. For some other people, Christmas will be a brutal, a grinding of broken relationships like the grating of broken bones. Estrangement from family, bitterness within marriage, resentment between friends, all will be intensified by the season. "This Christmas Im going to give out some love and appreciation, like a converted Scrooge, and not worry about what comes back. Im going to kneel at the manger for a moment, along with some others who love Christ... and be content. Merry Christ- mas. Pastor, Dave Boge Ive Merrill Ogden Christmas receiving As I approached the cashier in the store, she asked me, "Hello, How are you?" I gave her one of my stock answers to that routine question, "Things could be much, much worse. How are you?" Her answer surprised me a little because it wasnt the standard, "Just fine." It was, "Im feeling awful, (she obviously had some illness in the sinusitis family) Im poor and Im" getting married in seven days. Feeling awful and being poor are terrible things. But getting married on top of it all is really a pitiable situation. I couldnt help myself. At the end of my purchase transaction, I pressed a $10 bill into her hand and sincerely said, on your "Congratulations wedding and Merry Christmas." Had this little story ended there, I wouldnt be telling it. What happened next disappointed me. The young lady refused by gift and absolutely would have none of it. My goal of a quiet little gift could not be accomplished as she was ready to "fight" against giving the gift. "In addition to supporting Jackson School we want to expand our neighborhood involvement. Since the school and the department are in a high crime area, becoming part of the very successful McGruff program seemed like a good idea. " More than 500 students attended the Christmas party. The children saw a McGruff skit, sang Christmas carols, played violins, painted fossils, learned pioneer dances and saw wildlife and water conservation demonstrations. Santa brings seniors joy During this time of year a certain scripture comes to mind. Join with us for just a moment in its review. "Now when Jesus was bom in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is bom King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. (Matt. 2:1-2- ) When we read in any sacred text of scripture we read that every prophet from the days of Adam knew of that first Christmas and testified of the divine ministry of the mortal Messiah. We too must come to know our Savior. In Gethsemane and on Calvary, He worked out the universal gift of the resurrection and the infinite and eternal atonement. We must do as the wise men of old did. We must seek out the Christ and follow Him. Those who are wise still seek Him today. We must seek Him in everyone we meet. The poor and the needy, those who are low in spirit, those we visit and home teach. Those who just need a kind word, or just a listening ear. Those who are sick and ill or otherwise hindered by this mortal body. This we know that when we have done it "unto the least of these, Jeanne Cook, daughter of Law- you have done it unto" Him that we seek. This year we hope that you will try to respond to the rence and Jeannine Cook, Mor- "What did you get from Christmas? instead, "What did question, oni, recently returned from for Christmas?" Logically and obviously, if giving is to happen, there must be a receiver to compete the action of giving. Its a two part equation. If someone is to be generous, there must be someone willing to be the beneficiary of the generosity. The equation must balance. Sometimes at thi time 6fj year, we have difficulty being gracious receivers of gifts. For some, it is much easier to give than to receive. Some of us feel compelled to keep a "mental scoreboard" on holiday gifts. It becomes a ledger of whether we are reciprocating to everyone, appropriately keeping in mind the approximate value of the gifts exchanged, etc., etc. Giving and receiving can be fun. Its been going on all around us. I would be curious to know how many plates of goodies have been delivered in Sanpete County this month. It must be in the thousands. (Maybe we ought to consider buying stock in C&H Sugar Company.) Ive seen and heard of many Sanpete people doing nice things for each other.
