Show Snow College Badgers pound Phoenix CC , 66-- 0 enixs quarterback by Ken Beazer EPHRAIM-- Snow College answered all questions regarding their ability to rebound from a loss by pounding Phoenix CC, The victory mercilessly, 66-put to rest any doubt as to the Badgers ability to bounce back from their loss to Ricks College a week earlier. The drubbing of the Bears was swift and effective, never leaving the game in doubt, as Snow College dominated all phases of the game from the start. Snow College quarterback. Fred Salanoa, got things rolling early when he connected with Johnny Tejada on a short screen pass that eventually turned into a touchdown. Two minutes later, Salanoa found Jack in the end zone on a toss, and the route was on. the first quarter was . Before over, Snow College found the goal line again when running back, Phillip Heywood, punched a two-yar- d run across, making the score 21-The second quarter was a mirror image of the first as Salanoa tossed his third touchdown pass of the game, this one a to Tejada with 11:05 left before half. The Badger defense took care of the scoring for the remainder of the first half as Tim Suesue recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown followed by Donovan Arp sacking Pho 0. heart-breaki- 40-ya- rd Sch-weig- er six-ya- rd 0. er in the end zone for a safety. Snow Colleges defense pounded the Bears offense all game long, creating nine turnovers and holding Phoenixs offense to an anemic, minus 39 yards rushing. The Badger defensive unit yielded a paultry 118 yards of total offense for the game, on their way to collecting their first shutout of the season. With time running out in the first half, kicker, Scott Thompfield goal son, booted a to send the Badgers into the locker room with a 39-- 0 lead. Unfortunately for the Bears, Snow College wasnt done yet. It took the Badgers only 27 seconds into the second half before they found the pay dirt again when Kevin Curtis hauled in Salanoas fourth touchdown pass, this one from 1 8 yards out. Esekia Afatasi got himself involved in the scoring, carrying the ball across the goal line from one yard out to make the score 52-- 0 in favor of the Badgers. Back-u- p quarterback. Matt Thornton, took control of the Badgers offense in the third quarter and didnt waste any time finding David Steel for an eight-yar- d scoring strike, then did himself in by racing up the middle 13 yards for a touchdown to round out the 37-ya- rd scoring. The strong team showing was solidified by varsity runners Preston Bailey and Joseph Papenfuss. "With just one race before Region competition, I think we are the team to beat. We have now moved from fourth to second to first and, with Region ort oiir hbme (fStlrse, it is going to be a challenge for anyone to beat us," commented Coach Bedford. "We just have to keep on doing what we already have shown we can do." The girls race proved exciting as well. Showing improvement in each race she runs, freshman Khirsta Papenfuss of the Lady Hawks broke the 21 minute barrier and finished third overall in leading her team to a fourth place finish. Wasatch Academys Summer Peterson, a junior from Ephraim, ran her best race of the season as well and finished not far behind in 22:20, good enough for fifth place. Other supporting Lady Hawks were Kaylin Fullmer, Debbie Lee, Kyma Papenfuss and Rachel Carter. The meet was won by a strong team from Carbon, fol- lowed by Richfield, Emery, the Lady Hawks and Delta in fifth. Sanpete Harriers raced Oct. 7, at Emery. No details were available at press time.
