Troy Michael Kell, 28, who received the death penalty for the July 1994 slaying of fellow inmate Lonnie Blackmon, was given the opportunity to choose his own preferred method of execution either by firing squad or lethal injection at the Central Utah Correctional Facility last Thursday, Aug. 1. As Kell appeared in front of Sixth District Judge David Mower, he stated "Id rather die from a bullet than poison. " Mower set a Sept. 27, execution date which will be automatically stayed as Kells case goes through the mandatory appeals process. Kell was convicted of the aggravated murder of Blackmon, a black inmate, which was allegedly racially motivated. There were originally four defendants, all white, in the case. John Fredrick Cannistraci pleaded guilty to reduced charges and is currently serving one to 15 Eric years for manslaughter. Daniels was scheduled to appear in court last Thursday to enter a negotiated plea, but the proceed Ftn Green news ing was postponed to a later date. Charges against Paul Richard Payne were dismissed. Daniels and. two other inmates were accused 'of holding Blackmon while Kell stabbed him 67 times with a homemade knife, made from a razor blade inside a toothpaste tube. Kell addressed the judge saying he was truly sincere in his apology to Blackmons father. He also , told Ross Blackham and colleagues from the state attorneys office, and court staff he harbored no hard feelings towards them, they were just doing their job. Utah is the only remaining state which gives condemned inmates the choice of execution methods.
