Show July 10, 1996 - The Pyramid Shopper - Page 7 A A new concept of the Americas by Linnie Findlay The Mormon Miracle Pageant unfolds in sweeping splendor across Manti Temple Hill. "An awesome and magnificent experience," wrote one visitor. "A reverent and dazzling rendition of Americas past and future," said another. "Unexpec- ted!... Stimulating ! . . . Rewarding! are other frequent comments. " Dedicated in 1888; rededicated in 1985 MANT- I- The Manti LDS Temple, first dedicated in 1888, was closed in 1981 for a process of renovation and restoration; then on June 14, 15 and 16, 1985, it was rededicated during nine separate services conducted by President Gordon B. Hinckley, who at the time was second counselor in the First Presidency. The building received a new electrical system, new plumbing, and new heating and cooling systems. Included in the remodeling effort were the chapel, cafeteria, kitchen and laundry. Murals on the walls of several rooms and 65 pieces of original furniture were professionally cleaned and restored. New lighting fixtures, draperies and carpeting were installed, new furnishings were purchased. Both the original and new furnishings, including curtains and draperies, are of die Eastlake design which was popular when the temple was built. The new carpet laid in the temples Celestial Room is particularly interesting since, even though the room had been recarpeted several times over the years, a remnant of the century-oloriginal carpeting was found in a Manti residence. A decision was made to have the original carpeting authentically reproduced, so the remnant was sent to a mill in England which had one of only a few looms in the world capable of producing the required 27 colors and shades. The temple annex was also remodeled, which included the addition of three new marriage sealing rooms, new dressing rooms, a childrens nursery area and offices. The cream-colore- d oolite stone for the exterior of the addition was taken from the same nearby quarry which provided the original temple building material. One of the new sealing rooms features a valuable, hand-wovPersian carpet, known as an Isphahan and featuring a "Tree of Life" design, which was donated by a Maryland couple. One of the temples ten sealing rooms features an altar and 30 chairs covered with a needlepoint design that took 64 area women a full year to produce. An exterior entrance was 11-1- 3, 16-2- Exterior rennovation underway on temple A major exterior preservation the historic Manti Temple is currently underway and evidence of that work may be evident during this years Mormon Miracle Pageant. The project includes replacement or restoration of deteriorating stone; repair of mortar joints, stripping, repair and painting of woodwork on windows. The project should not affect the pageant or the normal operation of the temple The Manti Temple, completed in 1888, was the third to be dedicated by the church. Its project on oolite exterior is a cream-colore- d limestone - taken from a nearby quarry, which will also supply replacement stones for the more weather-wor- n portions of the exterior. The temple underwent a major restoration in 1985, with murals and furniture cleaned and professionally restored. Architect for the preservation project is Harry Weese Associates, Chicago, the same firm involved in similar restoration at the Washington Temple two years ago and at the Salt Lake Temple four years ago. Love of Americas constitution felt by those members of the new but rapidly growing Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints is powerfully contrasted with some of the distresses they suffered in several states. Many who lived through that era of persecution crossed the plains and toiled through the Rocky Mountains to build new lives in the harsh Great Basin country. Along with axes, firearms and food, they brought their books, fine china, even pianos! Though the dangers they faced were real, they found joys, too, through their faith in God, their dedication to the best in this life, and their hope in a glorious hereafter. These are the messages life each year by a to brought cast and production staff of over a thousand in the Mormon Miracle Pageant. d, Full Service 475 SOUTH MAIN EPHRAIM. (These writings were first published in 1830, as the Book of Mormon.) When the scenes fade, echoing in the mind are the words given in the pageant as the warning of Moroni, the books last prophet: "Remember, O remember... he that possesses this land shall serve God or be swept off. " The pageant shows how those who accepted the message of the Book of Mormon soon after its provided for the temple baptistery and the original font, resting upon the backs of 12 cast iron oxen (representing the 12 tribes of Israel) received a stainless steel liner. The Manti Temple was originally dedicated by President Wilford Woodruff on May 21, 1888, after 11 years of construction. It was the fifth LDS temple to be completed, and the Churchs third since moving its headquarters to Utah in 1847. three-year-lo- Pages ot the past unfold during the-- almuaf Mohnoii mu awe Pageant.
