Bradys Brady exhibition closes Parallel between famous photographer and settler by Oneita Sumsion The Mathew Brady portraits of Lincoln & His Contemporaries closed at Fairview Museum of History and Art on Saturday with record crowds. The exhibition drew hundreds of viewers Saturday, a fitting culmination to a great exhibition, said Betty Jorgensen, Museum Director. The exhibition, from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the National Portrait Gallery, now travels to St. George Art Museum where it. will hang July 20 to Aug. 30. The Mathew Brady photographs caused pause for reflection by many of the Fairview Bradys and others with connections to early Sanpete County settlers named Brady. While Mathew B. (B. doesnt stand for anything) Brady reportedly had no recollection of his family except to say his father was Irish, the extensive Brady family of Fairview, Utah, know who they are and where they came from - to a point. In fact, one of the first Fair-vieBradys. Warren P., along with Jehu Cox, reportedly wrote a letter to President Brigham Young asking permission to make a settlement at "this place" - "this place" later becoming the city of Fairview. The request was granted on condition that there was water enough for 30 families. Thus, 20 men met together on the new townsite, where another Brady, Lindsay A., spoke and along with others pledged "to do their part in building up a city. " Subsequently, Warren P., his father, Lindsay Anderson Brady, Sr., and his three brothers, Lindsay Anderson Brady, Jr., Jordan, and Marion Hendrickson Brady, were among the first settlers of Fairview. The names of three Bradys appear on a monument erected in Fairview in 1909 honoring the first 16 settlers. They are Warren P. Brady, Lindsay A. Brady, Sr., and Jordan Brady. Four Brady sisters also settled in Fairview. Ironically, Lindsay Anderson Brady Sr. was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, June 11, 1811, to Thomas Brady and Elizabeth Bailey, who disowned him when he and his wife joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints. Consequently, little is known regarding earlier Brady ancestry. Genealogical records show Bradys in Kentucky and Virginia in the mid 1700s. However, the Fairview Bradys, like Mathew Brady, believe their earlier roots are in Ireland. Similar to Brady the photographer, Lindsay A. reportedly left little historical information on his early life, except that he was one of a large family of children. According to "Mathew Brady, Historian With A Camera" by James D. Horan, "No great photographer has ever impressed his personality on the nation in which he lived more strongly than Mathew B. Brady." Yet, so little information was left regarding his personal history that "Brady and his men remain shadowy figures obscured by the mists of time." On the other hand, extensive records and family histories of and their six children were living in Winter Quarters, making Lindsay A. and his descendants are extant. Lindsay A. was father to 10 children by his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Hendrickson; 14 children by his second wife, Susannah Ward Allen; and 11 by wife number three, Caroline Wilhelmine Johnson. Thousands of descendants have been recognized prominently in Fair-vieand throughout the world. preparations for their long trip across the plains to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Mathew Brady was introduced to photography by Samuel F.B. Morse who had recently returned from Paris where he learned the art of the daguerreotype. Brady subsequently enrolled in a class taught by Morse, after which "his life was inextricably enmeshed with the infant art of photogra- w In 1849, while Mathew B.
